Actually, this is a bit of sad local activism news to start the day.
After a brief stint as leader of Kansas City's Liberty Restoration Project, Megan Westenhaver has stepped down.
Behind the scenes there's a bit of drama but for the most part everybody seems to be TRYING to be as classy as possible amid some tense discussions.
As of this posting . . . There's no comment on the matter from Megan but we'll post anything on the record that she sends our way . . .
We had high hopes for Ms. Westenhaver and still hope that she continues her activism in the name of liberty in the Kansas City area. Remember that TKC broke news of her rise to leadership last month.
Today and in this week's Pitch there's a nice profile of Ms. Westenhaver that is STILL worth a read. It makes us feel a bit better about our journalism skills to see that The Pitch had a bit of problems with her name as well given that their listing contradicts her FB profile. STILL . . . Worth a read and a nice look into a local activist.
Nevertheless . . . Even at the grassroots level, taking on leadership in this Cowtown isn't an easy thing but it's nice to see young people like Megan make an effort to participate in our screwed up Kansas City Area Democracy.
It would appear that her "rise to leadership" was not particularly noticeable to anyone other than herself and TKC, nor was her demise.
ReplyDeleteThere must be at least tens of thousands of "organizaitons" with "leaders" in KCMO and most of them spend most of their time infighting, wrestling over nickels and dimes from the city, or bad mouthing other "organizations" doing exactly the same things.
What aspect of "liberty" in particular was she fighting for?
Just some more folks who'll be hanging around the 22nd floor at 12th and Oak looking for a handout.

ReplyDeleteAnd LRP was sure effective in its campaign against city hall spending. Just yesterday, the big annoucencment of moving forward on the new taxpayer-funded downtown hotel took place.
LRP is just yet another little band of people who get together to celebrate their own imagined importance and talk among themselves without making any real effort to actually accomplish anything.
Next will be the widely-covered ressurection of the KCMO Occupy, consisting of a copuple dozen people and a giant puppet.
KCMO can't even do protest group well.

ReplyDeleteHow many people are actively invovled? How is it organized? How do they choose their "leaders"?
Besides standing on street corners protesting red light cameras as the greatest infringement on civil liberty since the Bolshevik Revolution, what else do they stand for? What else have they accomplished?
I'd kind of like to know if this is a true political movement worth paying attention to, or five or six people who meet in a bar every now and then to bitch about the condition of the universe.

I voluntarily resigned my position as Executive Director on Monday, September 16th, due to personal issues and conflicts, none of which I feel any need to discuss at length and particularly not in a public forum. I will continue working on issues related to the restoration of personal liberties, and hope to support the many friends I have gained over the last few months of involvement.
