Axing An Important Question: Will Kansas City Overcome Our Death Culture?!?!
It's important to note that recently the FBI noted that the US violent crime rate was down for the fifth year in a row. Meanwhile Kansas City's homicide and violence numbers have remained constant over the same period of time.
Even worse . . . Kansas City crimes are often horribly and tragically creative . . . Today's example:
KSHB: A man was hit in the head with an ax during a disturbance on Friday night.
That's right . . . Despite so much All-Star hype . . . At the end of the day we live in town where "axing" somebody isn't just slang for posing a question but a very real proposition of bodily harm.
Furthermore . . . Not all of these tragedies are related to hotspots, gang violence or the social ills of the urban core . . . There are a great many domestic disputes in Kansas City that turn deadly and defy so-called "demographic explanation" or any other statistical stereotype.
And so we're "axing" this wicked little town an important question that cuts to the core of our local life . . .
IS IT A CULTURE OF DEATH BEYOND MERE DEMOGRAPHIC ACCUSATIONS THAT MIGHT BE THE ROOT CAUSE OF SO MUCH KANSAS CITY VIOLENCE AND HOMICIDE?!?!?!
This isn't merely the same old tired argument about a specific sub-genre of rap music that touts "no snitchin" . . . Let's look at the big picture.
On a global level, we see that over the past 100 years, human life has been more expendable and easily destroyed than at any other time in world history.
Just a few examples that quickly come to mind: WWII, The Holocaust, Stalin's purges and those of other Communist regimes, mass Cambodian slaughter, African Tribal Infighting and government upheaval, Abortion, drugs wars in Latin America and the crusades of The former Soviet Union and The U.S. in the Arab world have cost hundreds of millions of lives. Accordingly, expediency, degradation or ambivalence regarding human life have ruled the planet for a century. Still want to argue? Even among so many hopeful hipsters, "occupiers" and "progressives" there hasn't been a drop-off in iPad sales even after the horrific conditions of Apple's Chinese work camps was revealed.
To wit, across the globe it seems that the value of life is significantly less than at any other time in human history. Kansas City has always been a place more practical than any other part of the world . . . So, it stands to reason that this town has seen the horrific example set by the rest of the planet and taken these despicable lessons to heart.
Again, many people are quick to blame to police or demographic trends . . . But that data doesn't always prove correct in every Kansas City murder case. There might be weak trends but no scientific model of causation can be applied . . . Anything less is just mere speculation and mostly racist drivel. Real Talk: The overwhelming majority of residents in Kansas City's urban core have no involvement in violence, murder or any other sort of crime.
In the end and despite demographics, it seems that it is the absence of LOCAL MORAL LEADERSHIP that has doomed Kansas City into accepting this culture of death that is so pervasive on the planet.
Consider . . .
KC doesn't vote and we mostly regard our political leaders and public officials as a joke.
This town suffers under the same demographics related to declining and broken families enduring divorce that are part of a national trend.
Even more specific and taking into account the history of this town: The culture of civic involvement that once defined Kansas City has now been reduced to battles of political positioning or merely rich people building altars to their own legacies see: K-PAC. Not so long ago Kansas City's civic leaders worked together for the shared benefit of this entire community. Now so many of our civic organizations throughout the metro are nothing more than groups dedicated to careerists, petty politics and pursuing tax breaks.
In the absence of any MORAL LEADERSHIP Kansas City has taken to killing itself.
Other than identifying this trend, TKC can't really help . . . I've got X-box games to play and supermodels to oogle.
Cowards in the comments mostly serve to rhetorically cut down most people working fight crime in the urban core and trying to provide an example of non-violence to people throughout Kansas City. Most of the racist chatter on this blog is merely fodder with a few flowers blooming in an overall pile of manure.
Meanwhile . . .
Our Mayor so desperately wanted to inspire this town but nowadays he seems more concerned with baseball games, Toy Trains and raising taxes for the benefit of his corporate buddies.
In the final analysis . . .
It will take nothing less than an attempt to save the soul of this town in order to buck the trend of so much Kansas City homicide and violence.
Sadly, it's clear that there are very few up to the task and maybe even fewer willing to follow any kind of leadership that attempts to assert the inherent value of the lives of ALL of our residents.

Actually, the developed world is significantly less violent than it ever has been in the history of humankind. Even in the country, the day-to-day violence of the late 20th and early 21st century is quantifiably less than at any other time in history.
People who live in this media blitz seem to have a pretty myopic view of human history and violence.

Tony, that was very articulate. The D-Bags who run the local television stations should have you doing editorials. Keep that up and you might turn into a real journalist and I do mean that as a compliment.
You're right that there's a grat lack of moral leadershihp in KCMO, or leadership of any kind for that matter.
And you're also right that lots of folks are working every day to try to make their neighborhoods safer by working with each other and building realtionships with the police.
City and self-appointed leaders of the black community, on the other hand, spend their time looking out for themselves and the little band of regular insiders at city hall. And most of the groups and individuals actually trying to make a difference can't get the time of day from any of them.
Public leadership doesn't caome from insider deals and it certainly isn't based on blaming everyone else for a community's problems and excusing any kind of behavior, even criminal.
People are tired of living in fear in their own homes and they're tired of the racial intimidation and shakedowns that the cowards in the business community and local government just can't say no to.
Moral leadership is what's needed and some basic courage too.

Here is an inconvenient truth (if I may borrow a phrase) that if you look at any American city where blacks are in the majority and they run the city government, you have a city government ripe with corruption and cronyism. You have a decaying city with high taxes and no growth and white flight. You run white people out of a city and the city begins to die. I cannot think of any successful growing city with a black controlled government. Virginia had a black governor and he was voted out of office after one term. New York City had a black mayor and he was voted out of office after one term and since then, New York City has not elected another black mayor since. This is not racism, this is the truth. It is not a question of if Kansas City becomes another Detroit but a question of when Kansas City becomes another Detroit because the blacks control education, government and the police here.

Newark, New Jersey is experiencing a Renaissance because of the work of their black mayor.
The middle class has been hit hard, but to really make a difference you must start at the very bottom & work your way up. You have homeless children: start there.
