Airick Leonard West: just filed for April 3rd kcps board election

A link to his facebook note:

Airick Leonard West for KC School Board, Director At-Large -- April 3rd, 2012

Here's an opening passage:

"My name is Airick Leonard West, I am running for the at-large seat for the Kansas City Public Schools Board of Education on Tuesday, April 3rd, and I'm asking for your support. As a community, we have had some remarkable successes over the past four years, and though there have been significant setbacks, we remain in a position to leverage our successes to continue creating educational achievement for all scholars. And that is the fundamental issue: educational achievement for all scholars. But before we could get there, we had to first create the environment in which achievement could flourish. Today I want to share with you how far we've come, what critical steps we must take next and ask for your support on Tuesday, April 3rd."

  3. I say "Go for it Arick". I am not a patron. Kids went to SME, and I have no hesitation to tell anyone that I would not send my dog to the KCMOSD. I attended SME too, back when Southwest was twice as prestigious and considered one of the best high schools in the country.
But Arick endures and prevails. He has a passion for keeping youngsters on track, and I appreciate his attributes.
Patrons dont have a lot of choices, but I see Arthur Benson (who made $millions from the District) and Airick. I'll take Airick, even though I have no vote or official voice.
Benson once said that the children in the District don't have the right to a good education, just an integrated education. Now they get neither. Their grandparents and great grandparents had a segregated education, but at least they got one. How have things improved?

  5. Yet down the street at City Hall, fledgling Einsteins Jermaine Reed and Michael Brooks manage to kill a well thought out school truancy ordinance. Brooks wants the schools to have more alternative schools and social workers. News flash to idiot Brooks: if the kids won't go to school, they won't see the social worker or attend the alternative school. Reed's simpering comments aren't worth revisiting.

Maybe Airick can help. It's obvious Reed and Brooks can't and won't.

I'm intrigued and I might even vote for him. He might have wanted to file earlier though. This doesn't leave him a lot of time to to talk to potential voters.

  7. do write in candidates FILE with some official body as a write in candidate or just ANNOUNCE IT?

  8. Write in candidates can file with the election board.

But the KC School Board Election doesn't require it.

Reward him for allowing the District to become unaccredited on his watch.

Couldn't happen any place in America but Kansas City.

  19. Remarkable success? I might have missed that. Perhaps it is another district he is talking about. The Kansas city district defines Epic Failure.

  20. I have an idea. Let's keep repeating the same mistake so nothing ever changes. It hasn't worked so far. So why do anything different?

  21. Airick, don't let some of these really rude people dissuade you. You are doing the right thing for the students and that's the most important part of why I continue to support your work.

I will definitely write-in your name because your leadership has accomplished a lot despite some setbacks.

    Keep up the great work!

  24. A one-trick song-and-dance man who barely made it through high school, dropped out of college after a year, lucked into a job with a computer company that soon went belly-up and picked over what was left for himself. Yeah ... THAT is who I want serving on the school board.

  27. @3/23/12 5:33 PM The School District doesn't need legislation from City government to get kids to class. So, I 100% agree with Brooks & Reed on their willingness to stand up for the urban children of Kansas City, MO. (It might actually thunder, hail and lightening is bound to strike… can’t stand Jermaine Reed; but I agree on this issue. Councilman Brooks did a fantastic job standing up for children and ensuring that they are not criminals for skipping school. We can’t keep criminalizing people for being free in this country; that includes being free to destroy themselves. What we must do is motivate; legislation has never motivated anyone to do anything. It’s certainly a deterrent; but that’s not the same as motivation.
KCPS Board is the governing body of the district but they refuse to govern. Everybody wants to be seen; which places the children of this City at a disadvantage. If you want truancy to be resolved, the KCPS school board needs to revise the current truancy policy so that it’s effective in motivating parents, children & teachers to class. That’s the bottom line. City legislation will not even come close to addressing the real issue. Kids will and always have come to class if they deem that something valuable is being shared. Do the work to turn this sinking ship around; stop making excuses for why the school district can not be successful. We need another law like we need Sly James as our Mayor for another 4 years; both are highly ineffective and provide for meaningless contributions to this community.
