Dear Mr. Byron: Thank you for your post. Yes, the cases are different; and that fact should be considered in assessing them. As far as the tragedy that befell Trayvon and his family, I can understand people feeling frustrated by the often quite slow judicial process in this country. Another quote from Justice Holmes: "The wheels of justice grind exceedingly slow, but they grind exceedingly fine." But, the fact remains, people should be tried in courts before judges and juries--not in the media, not on the Internet, and not by people in the streets making thinly veiled threats of race riots if they don't get their way--as happened in Oakland in 2010 in the case of the subway shooting. I know it is painful for the Al Sharptons of the world to hear this, but the people threatening violence if they don't get their way in this case are cut from the same bolt of cloth as the white lynch mobs of my native South. As the old French proverb goes: "It is only the truth that hurts." Or, as one of my Republican friends said to me after the Duke Lacrosse case: "Didn't you liberals used to be the ones opposed to lynch mobs?" Take care--again, thanks for your comments. ReplyDeleteByron- I would point out that, other than the fact that he is dead and was shot by Zimmerman, we do not KNOW what happened.
ReplyDeleteWhat we do know is that albeit the police work was sloppy, Zimmerman provided a plausible story and physical evidence corroborated the story.
On the other hand, no witnesses actually saw the shooting or the events leading up to it. A statement of a 16 year old girl was elicited from the family's attorney several weeks after the incident, neither under oath nor available for questions to clarify certain aspects of her statement.
The attorneys representing Martin's family know Zimmerman has no assets. That's why they want to drag the police chief into this thing- to get to the City's insurance money.
And THAT is what this is truly about- not justice, not due process- simply more grifters wanting to get paid.
Mr. Evans. You are totally correct on your statement. You Sir, have made tremendous sense on your comments that you have posted. The media is the problem and assumptions are right up there with it. Color shouldn't matter. Sharpton and Jackson just show people that they are for one race. If they would argue for a White murder victim once in a while, then they wouldn't look so biased. We are human beings but people like Sharpton and Jackson make other races besides theirs look like animals. Yes, there are White people who do the same but you don't see it on the news and they aren't begging for attention. Sharpton and Jackson are grifters who feed off of black families tragedies.
