TKC LIVE @ THE KCPD FORUM!!!

A good turnout today at the Chief's forum . . .

We'll have more details later and a few more pics but what we like is that people from the community can talk face to face with whatever division interests them.

They'll be here until 2 in the PM so feel free to show up and get a little more involved in new KCPD community policing efforts . . .

MORE . . .

It was nice to see Councilman Jermaine Reed talking to one of his constituents at the event.

Kansas City Journalist Eric Wesson was also in attendance . . . He was broadcasting live on his show "Makes Me Wanna Holler" on KPRT. In this photo he's conducting an interview with Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

TKC was lucky enough to talk to Mr. Wesson on air sometime after this photo was taken.

Again, the forum was organized into booths and here's a quick look at KCPD officers and their tools of the trade.

The Jackson County Combat Program was also at the forum . . . At first I thought this was an "Independence Breakfast" but it turns out it's just supplies confiscated from a Meth Lab on display.

Again, the community turnout was good but not great . . . Here's longtime Community Activist Ron McMillan talking with a member of the KCPD.

For the record . . .

THANKS TO MORE THAN A FEW KCPD OFFICERS WHO ARE ALSO TKC READERS!!! IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE WHO DO REAL WORK IN KANSAS CITY ALSO TAKE A MOMENT TO CHECK OUT THE SCRIBBLINGS OF THIS KANSAS CITY BLOG COMMUNITY!!! IT WAS NICE MEETING AND TALKING TO ALL OF YOU!!!

Also . . .

THE KCPD WAS WORKING EARLY MORNING DURING THE WEEKEND IN ORDER TO BUILD MORE NEIGHBORHOOD INTERACTION . . . NOW RESPONSIBILITY NEEDS TO BE PLACED ON THE COMMUNITY TO TURN OUT IN GREATER NUMBERS IN ORDER TO CREATE A BETTER PARTNERSHIP TO FIGHT CRIME!!!

It really is a two way street.

New KCPD Chief Darryl Forté has CLEARLY sent the message that greater community involvement is going to be a part of his administration. We can only hope that more local residents take advantage of this opportunity.

DEVELOPING . . .

  3. I want to thank the Chief for at least trying. With that said let me offer some opinions:

Members of the community, who are living in fear of crime, are not going to go to these orchestrated meetings where the media is present and dozens of law enforcement officers are standing around the room huddled together afraid to talk to a "civilian". People are not going to run the risk of being seen as friendly to the police when they have to return back to their homes next to drug dealers. KCPD at this time cannot keep these citizens safe!

KCPD would be better served going to where the community works and plays. Instead of stopping at Quicktrip for a free drink, stop at Fast Stop and get a drink, stop and the neighborhood barbershop and get a haircut, stop at a playground, stop at a basketball court, eat in the hood and so on. KCPD needs to be more approachable. People want to know the names of officers and who works in their neighborhood.

Next, KCPD needs to be more visible. The community wants to see officers stopping cars, stopping pedestrians, and doing business checks

The Chief is on the right track but he has to get back to the basics of police work. KL

  5. 12:23pm is right on the money and some of the people who can and should be taliking to residents in these settings are the councilmembers who have been elected to represent them. It's good to see Councilman Reed at the event, but where were the others? There's a great hunger for people in the community to learn how to band together and build cohesive neighborhoods where they can play a role in working with the police to help protect themselves and their families from the thugs. And there's no one more likely to provide that opportunity than the members of the city council. They've always been concerned about "meddling" in KCPD tactical affairs. Now's there's a way they can play a positive, constructive, and SUSTAINED role.
Small groups, front porches, living rooms, libraries, community centers, place where people go themselves. That kind of work would do way more for the east side than these ridiculous projects like Citadel Plaza.
