TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! CHECK THE TOP 3 REASONS TO VOTE NO ON THE PRICEY KANSAS CITY ZOO SALES TAX!!!
Kansas City has a horrible way of repeating the same mistakes.
This town continues to re-elect politicos who simply do nothing but smile and spend money.
Enablers would rather continue sacrificing one generation after the next of Kansas City Public School "scholars" in order to spite the Civic Council rather than trying anything but THE SAME OLD FAILED PLAN COMPRISED OF NOTHING MORE THAN EMPTY PROMISES OF HOPE AND CHANGE that has marked the ongoing public education nightmare in the urban core.
Local football fanboys always forget about the annual late-season collapse that is a tradition for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Worst of all . . .
KANSAS CITY LEADERS STILL WANT TAXPAYERS TO SUBSIDIZE MONEY LOSING ATTRACTIONS FOR THE BENEFIT OF SUBURBANITES!!!
Now, I know I'm destined to lose on this one because nobody's going to vote next week and there is a full court press for the KC Zoo Sales tax . . . Still, because this cowtown has no organized opposition to oppose frivolous new taxes and the goons at The Star love it when KC Proper picks up the check for their entertainment . . . It is my civic duty (hehe) duty to break down the Zoo Sales Tax and describe why it's a bad deal.
CHECK THE TOP THREE REASONS TO VOTE NO ON THE KANSAS CITY ZOO SALES TAX!!!
Here we go . . .
THE KANSAS CITY ZOO SALES TAX WILL NEVER END!!!
Buried in a modicum of coverage of the tax is the fact that there's no "sunset" on this Jackson County levy. It is FOREVER. Locals will never see a day when a local institution asks for less money but this tax is built so that your grandkids will be paying for penguins long after you're gone to the great beyond.
THE KANSAS CITY ZOO SALES TAX SETS A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT FOR LOCAL INSTITUTIONS DOUBLE DIPPING!!!
The cheeky monkeys at the Zoo will NOT ONLY get paid through the General Fund BUT ALSO take this sales tax revenue. Proponents say this is a way for the zoo to to lessen their dependence on City Hall funding . . . However and once again, there is not one documented instance of a local cowtown institution asking for LESS money . . . It just doesn't happen.
Finally . . .
THE GOLDEN GHETTO NEEDS TO PAY FOR THE ZOO FIRST!!!
On the Missouri side . . . KC is suing a couple of counties to get this thing put on the ballot and the promise that JoCo will support the zoo is nothing but a pipe dream.
However, if this tax is defeated AND THEN JoCo voters want to pick up the tab for the KC Zoo that they so often enjoy and want broke-ass Jackson County to subsidize . . . I'll live blog from Monkey Island until an equal commitment is picked up. But that's not gonna happen.
Bi-State cooperation in the era of biz poaching is nothing more than a myth.
For these reasons and so many more . . .
IT'S IMMORAL TO ASK THE OVERBURDENED AND OVERTAXED RESIDENTS OF JACKSON COUNTY TO PAY FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT OF JOCO SUBURBANITES YET AGAIN!!!
Maybe Kansas City doesn't need a world class zoo at the expense of so many other FAILING city services. The promise of "tin-cup-urbanism" that attempts to lure the spending from suburbanites has heretofore shown NO real financial success, increase in revenue or anything but mounting bills for KC Proper.
In other words . . .
MAYBE IT'S TIME TO SAY NO TO THE KANSAS CITY MONEY PIT!!!
DEVELOPING . . .
But what about the penguins?
ReplyDeleteI'm voting for the zoo. I am concerned not about the touristy issue, but that our zoo continue as an institution that helps endangered species. The zoo is a very cool place, by the way...one of the best things about KC.
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason they want more money, the zoo is a dump.
ReplyDeleteNo shit!
I'm voting NO. The city, state & federal government all have this habit of spending money dedicated for one thing on things.
ReplyDeleteThe COMBAT tax paid for the rehab of a building the KC Election Board during a move.
The various police departments in the area routinely hand over money and property seized to the feds who then return it all directly to the police. Despite a law requiring all forfeitures go directly to local schools.
I plan on sending the zoo a check based on an estimate of what the tax would cost me. Along with a letter explaining why I could not support the tax.
No more money from Jackson County until Johnson County pays its fair share!!
ReplyDeleteVote YES bailout Kansas City.
ReplyDeleteJOCO pays its fair share when thy go to the zoo.
ReplyDeleteHow many times you rubes been to the zoo this last year?
That's what I thought.....
Count me as one Johnson county resident who goes to the zoo about 75 times a year, is a FOTZ and donates as well. I wish there could be more cooperation between JOCO and KC proper, in that we certainly enjoy the benefits of living near all that it has to offer.
ReplyDeleteWere I a KC resident, I would vote for it, but it is hard to argue that the dysfunctional city government could not use a lot of other things, primarily infrastructure related, as well.
Vote NO.
ReplyDeleteZoo's continue to be institutions that cause endangered species. Leave the animals alone. Leave them in their natural surroundings.
WOW that e-tax sure paid off.
ReplyDeleteYou say it is just to benefit the suburbanites.
ReplyDeleteDo only suburbanites go to the zoo? If so, why?
Isn't a bigger issue the tendency for KCMO to try to get someone else to pay for amenities that it built and owns?
If KCMO can't support ITS zoo, may KCMO should shut it down.
OPKS doesn't ask KCMO to support the Deanna Rose Farmstead.
This reminds me of London Andrews' enormous ass.
ReplyDeleteThe zoo is a luxury KC can no longer pay for.
ReplyDeleteLike in the game Monopoly a luxury tax card.
I use to read the KC star and Midwest voices but have given up on both your ability to post a comment is so difficult that I read TKC now. At least you have free speech here.
ReplyDeleteI back these Occupy protestors completely. They do not want billions but a livable wage where they can give their families a decent life but are stopped from doing so by the greed of corporations. There is enough in the world for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot support occupy kc and the zoo tax and call yourself a catholic.
ReplyDelete12:33 PM So now it's greed if you work long and hard and get an excellent wage and save/invest your money and make some more money? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Sounds like what you want is socialism. If these dillrods want a decent wage they are going to have to shower and go apply. Maybe work up like everyone else did. I now make a good wage but I started out making $3.35 an hour. Quit bitching, get off your ass, and start working toward something other than a handout. I like this little biblical quote:
ReplyDelete2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.
Basically what someone else makes is not your business so don't go bitching about it. I would say that a desire to have something you didn't work for and achieve is also greed. Bet you didn't think of that.
BTW these greedy corporations hire hundreds or thousands of people and give them good wages and benefits ilke insurance with their money.

ReplyDeleteWhat?
Has any of it has to with religion.

ReplyDeleteSave the The bible bullshit.
The Muslims will give you a different quote for the quatrain.
What fictitious superhero will you believe in next?
There sure are a lot of idiots who comment here.

Build a wall around your city. Accept revenue only from residents of Jackson County, MO. See how long that works for you!
ReplyDeleteWow .. there are THAT MANY GODS??
ReplyDeleteNo wonder we're all screwed!
okay, when did this discussion become about religion?
ReplyDeleteOccupy Wall Street? Let them occupy the Zoo!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Tony's efforts to convince KC voters that the zoo tax is a bad idea will be as effective as his effort to elect Tracy Ward to city hall.
ReplyDeleteAnd about as well thought out.
true dat.
ReplyDeleteHello...Kansas City and Jackson County are not the same place. Half of Jackson Countians do not live in Kansas City and are suburbanites who are not paying any taxes for the zoo right now. The Jackson County and Clay County zoo tax will be bringing in some suburban money (although Johnson County should help as well).
ReplyDeleteThe most visited place to see animals in the KC area iw the Deanna Rose Farmstead in south OP.
ReplyDeleteLots of Jackson Countians visit it along with Johnson Countians. The park is well designed and "just right" for the kidlets.
There are no exotic animals, but the kids love to see the farm animals and feed the baby goats. They can also fish with a bamboo pole, mine for "treasure",see an Indian tepee, and experience a one room country schoolhouse.
The latest addition is a General Store. The park adds a new attraction every year, and it is not the dump that the KC Zoo is.
