COWTOWN UNION SUPPORTED "OCCUPY" PROTESTS!!! KANSAS CITY AFL-CIO LEADER ENDORSES OCCUPY KC!!!

Interesting . . . Occupy KC stayed "grassroots" for about a week and a half . . . Now the Unions are seemingly taking control.

"Kansas City AFL-CIO leader backs Occupy protesters"

Sorry but Kansas City's "occupy" protest doesn't seem to have much in common with what's happening on Wall Street . . . Once again, in lieu of a genuine protest. This looks like nothing more than a Kansas City power grab.

I am sure there are plenty of people looking to co-opt this movement.

Right now it seems to be in the venting stage where people voice their frustrations. Some things said are ridiculous but at this stage every idea needs to be looked at without calling it stupid from the get-go.

Talked with Lou, a Hispanic, and his girlfriend while they worked on their signs.

Some blacks were taken back when I engaged them in conversation. But the conversations went well after the awkward starts.

I'll be going back to watch the evolution of the movement.

  11. Th tea Party and the Occupy Wall street crowds have much in common. If they would tune out the media, political parties, and unions they could come together and really have a revolution. The unions participation is the most hypocritical.

  12. “This devastating jobs crisis isn’t going to be solved by weakening collective bargaining and attacking the workers that serve our communities every day, like firefighters and teachers,” Dujakovich said.

Ummm...union lobbying and ridiculous public sector collective bargains leaving the taxpayers the bill is a huge part of the problem.

  13. Mr. Anthony, you are not that dedicated or appreciative of how forceful we will really be. Moving articles around does not help.

  14. It seems to me that Obama has a lot of cronies, and that they are getting millions in federal grants to prop up businesses can't couldn't survive otherwise.

Is that what these people are protesting?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why don't the unions just have their own protest?

  16. Well, I learned MY lesson about connecting a source up with Tony. I mistakenly told them he'd give them some publicity (as he gives so many bloggers and other causes publicity). Was I wrong! Learned my lesson on who can be fickle. Here he suggested that the Occupiers were too white, not colored enough. Selling out to unions, who Tee has a particular hard on for.

How obnoxious. Made me look like an idiot and I apologized to them for his bad treatment of them. In retrospect, just how many firemen did anybody see at the rally?

Very sad. They should have spent their TKC time talking to the Star which got one of the destinations wrong.

    Everybody learns lessons.

  19. Much easier to tear something down than build it up, eh Tony? I guess you're good with greed. You hate this town anyway, wouldn't expect you to appreciate those of us who are willing to leave the basement to protest every now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well I learned my lesson. I mistakenly told them that TKC would be a good source to publicize their event...figuring Tony often publicizes populist events. But he can be fickle...and if there's a union involved that causes him a hard on, he'll not give them good publicity, but will trash them.

Thats what he did with Occupy...and did anybody notice a bunch of firemen there? I don't think so.

I learned my lesson, and in fact swallowed hard and apologized for steering them in his direction.

Who knew he'd decide they were too white to be on his good side?

    Lesson learned.

Because they are opportunistic greedy fucks who will co-op any cause they think will further their political influence.
And its just a good chance to get out of doors in the nice fall weather.

  22. Unions, as much as they hate to admit, have a CONTRACT with their operators they must fulfill. If they walk off the job to protest something other than contract issues, they'd be in breech. Then it's not so much collective bargaining anymore, it's financial terrorism and they lose that 'higher ground' they've always claimed.

So don't look for unionists en masse to show up to OccupyKc or any other Occupy protests. All that brotherhood talk is just that, especially when their paychecks are on the line. Hell, the Steel workers here won't honor a painter strike, much less turn out for a twelve person demonstration.

The union leaders don't want the rank and file out there, not working, not earning, not able to pay those dues(read labor tax, kick back).

Maybe fifty years ago, one union would honor a strike by another union. Today, not so much.

  32. I saw the head of the New York City Teacher's Union on CBS Sunday promoting the protests.

    Thats a negative folks.

Teacher's Unions have a bad rap already, and the movement itself is, as Orphan fears, being co opted for various and sundry agendas.

Mike Lewis was on CBS Morning also, he was great.

    Check out "The Big Short."

  35. Unions SHOULD be supporting this! I am glad to see Duke and Dupin get out there! Only a small percentage of Americans work in union jobs, so unions are not the problem. BIG CORPORATE LOBBYISTS ARE! I am a democrat but Bill Clinton screwed us big time by passing NAFTA. I do not thinl anyone understood the repercussions it would have on American jobs. Now the government bails out the big guys while people lose their jobs, their homes and have to go on government assistance! More suicides, more taxpayers dollars, very hard on the economy. Unions need to get a foothold in this government and run the lobbyists out! the government needs to be for the people once again! Tony, What about the constitunal right of these people to gather and have free speech? You are against that? Why would YOU be for the government, when you used to work for the city and htey treated you poorly?

  36. So it's O.K. when the same criticisms about minorities are made against the tea party but the second someone treats a group left of center the same way it's unfair? With your double standards it's no wonder we get the elected representatives we have today. Kudos to TKC for staying consistent.

  37. Unions no longer support the oppressed masses. They support the middle class - Bourgeoisiefication. They are not part of the solution, they are part of the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  38. As an avid supporter of the occupations everywhere, I have to say that Tony's post is on point to a degree. It points out that being co-opted is one of the biggest challenges we face. Big money, big unions, and big politicians all want to figure out how to make the 99% do what they want. The occupations do support unions in general because 99% of us are either workers or unemployed, so worker issues are our issues. However, we also recognize that the unions generally support democrats and their voice in large numbers leads us dangerously close to being seen as a leftist movement, thereby dividing us. It is a balancing act, it is difficult, but we are staving off being co-opted for now. I, as a fairly rabid leftist, have spent way more time reaching out to Tea Party types to make sure they are happy and comfortable and not being alienated than I ever thought I would. Reaching out and keeping this element involved will not only help keep us from being co-opted by democrats, but will keep us from being hypocrites. If we want to be inclusive, voices of dissent must be included. Not becoming the puppet of a democratic union agenda is something we must keep at the front of our thoughts throughout this movement. Remember our message... We are the 99% and so is Tony. Seek points of agreement first, validate voices of dissent, then talk it out. Shouting people down alienates them and supports group-think. I strongly oppose group-think and will side with whoever is being shouted down whether I actually agree with them or not, unless they are racist/homophobic/etc.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I also agree that it is too white. I've been dong outreach in non-white communities. People of color have been fighting this same fight for generations. I think we sould take a humble approach, apologize, as white people, for taking so long to come out to join their fight, but we are here now. I'm wondering if some of the people responding to Tony's posts are actually people from the occupation or people trying to derail what we are doing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh, gotcha, You're screening. Cool :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Allowing someone to voice their opinion or say they agree with a Movement does not mean collusion. I think if people get off their asses and really come and find out what it's about and see the process unfold they will see that there are participants from many backgrounds and we definitely do not all agree! What I find valuable is that we are trying to hear each other out - or at least those of us who really believe in the Movement. It's not easy, comfortable or always pleasant. As some of us are found of saying true Democracy ain't always pretty. I know I enjoy reading some of the shit people feed you b/c often they feed it to you before others. In this instance you're thinkin' with the wrong head Tony. But then those of us who follow your blog know you're prone to that.

  43. Go for it...Dumbasses10/10/11, 6:58 PM

Keep it up. The unions will backslide as Obama is not re-elected. As some one else put it (perfectly) the movement is a circular firing squad with marginals and radicals and the Union (4% of the country) getting involved and Barry in the middle.

The Republicans will re-gain both houses and the White House.
