TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! WHILE KCMO CROSSROADS STRUGGLES, AN IMPRESSIVE JOHNSON COUNTY INTERURBAN ART HOUSE EMERGES!!!

The Golden Ghetto is no longer content play second best to Kansas City, Missouri's art scene.

For quite some time Kansas City, Missouri has benefited from the fact that Kansas is a vast cultural wasteland and patrons of the arts had to cross State Line in order to partake in any facsimile of artistic local culture. However, now that Kansas City Proper is having trouble maintaining viable arts facilities, the struggle for dominance of local high culture is starting to shift.

Nicole Emanuel is looking to change the perception of Johnson County as a home to nothing but look-a-like beige houses and luxury shopping locations with her Interurban art house proposal.

"There are a vast array of artists and patrons of the arts in this community and I think we can create a place within our community to showcase their skills and develop even more talent," Ms. Emanuel said. "Many people don't realize that there is a prosperous art scene in Johnson County and this facility is a sign of that progress."

Ms. Emanuel has been working at breakneck speed on this project since February and already she has earned cooperation from both public and private supporters.

The plan for a project she's calling "The InterUrban Art House" in Overland Park is detailed and offers a great look at what could be a bombshell in the local arts scene.

So far, Ms. Emanuel is proposing a "green" renovation of a building currently inhabited only by Roger The Plumber. She notes there are 14 units to rent for local art studios, not counting the 4 units that already look promising for pre-leasing or Roger The Plumber's ongoing lease.

The fast pace at which this project is coming to fruition is curious but it's important to note that Ms. Emanuel has already been a part of similar groundbreaking arts developments in San Francisco and Minneapolis. Her wealth of experience and talent has quickly drawn the notice potential investors, donors and artists excited to be a part of the project.

Take a look at a preliminary sketch of the JoCo art facility that is soon coming to pass.

As for the competition between the KCMO art scene and Johnson County, Ms. Emanuel see her new project as an opportunity.

"I think this space could serve as just another heart of a thriving arts community throughout the metro area in order to help better circulate traffic and interest," Ms. Emanuel said. "As for the perception of competition, I'm more focused on trying to develop this viable project for the arts in my community and I don't really have time to focus on the negative perceptions of other people."

Clearly, this is an important new development in the arts and it signals that Johnson County is no longer content to rely on Kansas City, MO for all of their cultural endeavors.

DEVELOPING . . .

  7. If JoCo keeps their money out there. Kiss the crossroads goodbye.

  8. As long as what passes for edgy in JoCo is whole wheat toast instead of white bread, I'm not sure they'll really be much of an arts scene there. There are some great galleries and some very accomplished artists, but there needs to be some concentration and environment of creativity with galleries, shops, the Art Institute, and just creative people interacting. Besides, in JoCo, there's no "there", there. The vast parking lots of stip shopping centers isn't going to attract much of a crowd.
KCMO city government and the usual insiders are doing their best to screw up the Crossroads, but they haven't succeeded yet.

  9. -KCMO city government and the usual insiders are doing their best to screw up the Crossroad-

The Crossroads is doing just fine. It did fine before the hipster doofus crowd showed up and will do fine after they leave.

  10. Regarding look alike JoCo homes: Take a good hard look at the old neighborhoods in KCMO. You'll see block after block of houses that look just alike.

By the way, the next guy to build a new house is always the guy who is causing suburban sprawl. It didn't happen when your house was built in a former cornfield a few years ago.

  11. There you go. A not for profit long con game in the making.

And, ironically, Roger the Plumber is onsite to give lessons in the short con.

  13. Stupid idea... why do we need to compete with the Crossroads District? An artsy soccer mom wants her own Crossroads...how sweet. Leave it alone already! Fuck beigeville...

  14. I painted murals on the streets of San Francisco for 9 years and spent 4 years in Not-for-profits to create safe, affordable Living&Studio space for low-income artists their families. For 5 years I've hired local artists to teach environmental art for elementary school children. I brought 25 Street Artists from Chicago to participate in "Museum of the Streets" and "Sorry for the MissCommunication".

This is NOT about competition with the CrossRoads, I spend most of my work and exhibit time there, even after I moved from Old Hyde Park.

This is about artists who have to work alone in their basements while raising kids, who need something closer for studio space, a place to be around peers and that offers professional development programs like KC ArtistsLink.

There is a huge audience and artist base outside of the Urban Core.

Of 189 responses to my survey (sent out to over 1,000 artists), 64% said yes or maybe to wanting studio space in JoCo.

  15. Nicole, you're such a twit. You sent out 1000 letters, and 100 or so came back and said "maybe we'd use space in JoCo". Then claim there's demand for it?

It sounds like this will, at best attract the usual suburban troglophiles (the basement dwellers, as you mention) who live in JoCo because they'd shit themselves if they saw a brown person.

  16. Yeah, unless your rich husband is footing the bill, you'll need some signed leases to get this off the ground.

  17. WOW - Nicole must be some kind of racist bitch. Trade Hyde Park for overland park? Obviously she pisses down the side of her skirt when she sees black women waiting on the bus, etc.

Stay in johnson county you waste of skin.
