What was lost in this year's embarrassing and childish Jackson County Sheriff's race was the fact that the office was held by a local class act.
This blog almost never praises the performance of a public servant but upon hearing of the legacy of outgoing Jackson County Sheriff Tom Phillips, I felt obligated to acknowledge his record of service to this community.
A lot of people may not know this but Phillips rose through the ranks to attain his position which is rare in a County known for such contentious politics. Phillips served as a deputy for the county, he has provided 30 years of service in the Jackson County Sheriff's office and amassed a solid network of community contacts and professional relationships that benefited his work as Sheriff.
Another interesting fact that folks may not know is that Phillips served as security for Larry Stewart, Kansas City's Secret Santa, for at least 20 years. In a recent interview, Phillips cited the experience as one of his most rewarding experiences during his career in Law Enforcement.
The controversey surrounding the incoming Sheriff shouldn't take away from the achievements of Phillips. Luckily, Phillips has set a great example for the next person to hold the office and his legacy can only benefit the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

ReplyDeleteSheriff Tom Phillips was the worst Sheriff in the history of the department.He leaves office with the same approval rating as President Bush, very low. His failed leadership and policies allowed for a department to flaunder over the last eight years. A department that easily could have been a leader in crisis intervention, sex offender monitoring, reducing felony warrants, and working to reduce KC's homicide rate.
ReplyDeleteBeing a "Good Ol Boy" is the only thing the Sheriff was good at. He leaves no legacy other then a broken department and missed opportunities to do what was right for the community. It's a shame that the public really doesn't know the destruction he left behind in his wake. Of course these were the same people that continued to elect him not knowing exactly what the Sheriff's Office is capable of doing in the community. Such a shame

ReplyDeletePhillips was the worst excuse for a sheriff ever. Ask any of the deputies that worked for him, I quote one "Phillips runs the sheriff dept. like a mickey mouse police dept." What kind of sheriff would not allow his deputies to do residence checks for wanted people after dark, his excuse because it's rude to bother people at night.
