
Read this one closely . . . There's a hint that even local conservative and former weather dude State Senator Mike Thompson isn't on board . . . Here are the basics:
Not all Republican legislators are backing the effort for partisan mid-decade redistricting.
The handful of moderates could hinder the effort. The most notable is Rep. Mark Schreiber, R-Emporia, who told Kansas News Service that he did not sign the petition after a GOP retreat last month.
"To me that's not the purpose of redistricting," Schreiber said. "It's not used as a political tool. It's to adjust for population changes."
The effort also faces at least some opposition among Johnson County Republicans, who could be put in a tough spot. As the state's most populous county and an electoral stronghold Davids, Johnson County would likely need to be split two if not three ways to draw safely Republican maps.
