Get Ready For Kansas City Bike To Work Day

A Kansas City blogger unintentionally provides a bit of a warning of yet another made-up holiday.

Kansas City Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 18, 2012.

Be very careful, this will be a day when Kansas City cyclists feel even more entitled to illegally hog the road. I'm not sure how local d-bags with bikes will make themselves even more obnoxious . . . But I'm certain it's possible as they prepare to roll into through this town, dart through traffic and become even more emboldened thanks to government cooperation.

Sadly, this hot mess doesn't end on local streets and I'm quite sure that this phoney holiday includes a few d-bags (we're looking at you Mike Hendricks) wearing banana hammock biker shorts to the office. Cycling might help save the planet but I'm not sure a world where JoCo cyclists rule is worth the trouble.

Photo babe: Carmen Electra shows just how cool she is by riding a lowrider bicycle.

  2. Dude, I cycle commute often and am as courteous and law abiding a rider as you'll ever see. Your use of the term douchebags is misguided. Yes, they're out there, but your gross generalization indicates that you're kind of clueless.

  3. Tony nails it. In the country these asshats ride the two lane black tops with no consideration for those of us that live in the country. They have no concept of how dangerous they are making things for everyone on the road. But they're enjoying themselves and going "green"......so it's OK.

  4. I'm guessing Tony had his bike stolen as a kid and is still unhappy :(

Biking is great exercise and there's no pollution when ridden.

If we just had dedicated bike lanes, it would be easier to not have to share the same lane. Sharing isn't hard BTW.

  5. Yeah, there are no asshats in cars or SUVs.

Like the asshat that almost t-boned me and my kids yesterday afternoon on the Plaza, because he was too damned privileged in his black Escalade to drive the speed limit, slow down as he made a right-hand turn, and actually yield to traffic already on the street (I was waiting behind a car that was pulling out from a diagonal parking spot).

Or the douchebag driving 80 and riding my ass in a 65 zone, who nearly clipped my bumper as she passed me on the right on 435 the other day.

Or how about the rich white lady in the Lexus, yapping on her cell phone, who accelerated to ~85mph to cut me off from about a quarter mile back as I signaled to change lanes.

And those are just the entitled, legal, courteous d-bags I've had to deal with in the last 72 hours.

Maybe I should start a blog and bitch every time someone talks about driving.

  6. Yeah, just 'cause some bumpkin on a rural highway can't be troubled to ease his foot off the gas pedal a little bit for 15 seconds once a week, that doesn't make cyclists responsible for making things SOOOOO dangerous for "everyone" on country roads.

Maybe if Tony spent some time visiting www.thefixfixfix.com he'd have a little more appreciation for fine bicycles. Then again, most of the bikes he'd see there would be fixies - the skateboards of the bicycle world.

Fixie riders, IMHO, are the biggest setback to efforts to win motorists over to a cycle-friendly mindset that we've seen in the last 40 years. Subtle irony, then, that I think thefixfixfix will be right up Tony's alley.

  7. For those of you hating on cyclists, I dare you to get on your bicycle and try to ride through Kansas City some time. As someone relatively new to cycling, I can tell you it's a very intimidating experience. Events like these are created to help people build their confidence. Why would you be angry about one less car to increase traffic on KC streets?

My best advice to you if you come across a cyclist. Take a deep breath, slow down, and realize the person on the bike is a human being just like you, or one of your friends or family members. They're seriously not out there to ruin your day or cause you to be late to work.
