TKC EXCLUSIVE QUESTION: WILL MIDTOWN KANSAS CITY SUFFER NEXT TOY TRAIN STREETCAR CONSTRUCTION NIGHTMARE?!?

Business along Main Street Kansas City often endures, crime, infrastructure neglect and a constant stream of homeless vagrants hassling customers. The new threat of streetcar construction adds yet another concern for merchants along this embattled corridor.

Nevertheless, the impact of a recent vote earned optimistic coverage from a local trade mag . . .

KC Biz Journal: Streetcar rolls toward Midtown as businesses prepare for pain, progress

However, we shouldn't forget . . .

STREETCAR SUPPORTERS WERE EXCEPTIONALLY HOSTILE TOWARD ANY BIZ COMPLAINTS AGAINST TOY TRAIN CONSTRUCTION THREATENING BOYCOTTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA BACKLASH AGAINST ANYBODY WHO DARED TO SPEAK UP!!!

Local biz dude STRETCH was quickly silenced when streetcar supporters promised to SHUT HIM DOWN if he continued to speak out against the streetcar. Notice that he's mostly quiet on the topic nowadays . . .

Even worse, the denizens of the downtown restaurant scene confronted threats from politicos & their consultants after DOCUMENTATION THAT STREETCAR CONSTRUCTION CAUSED YEARS WORTH OF DAMAGE TO RESTAURANTS ALONG THE LINE . . .

Examples from the not-so-distant past . . .

Pitch: Main Street's most respected chefs wonder how they'll survive streetcar construction

TKC: Streetcar Restaurants Suffer Toy Train Construction Nightmare

Perspective . . .

Supporters of the streetcar claimed that new biz created by the transit route would more than make up for the loss in revenue during construction. Sadly, that was only a promise to restaurant owners while employees lower on the food chain like servers, bartenders and other wait staff never received compensation for lost income. Now that the "starter line" is complete service industry workers near the loop report that biz is pretty much back to normal but without the massive influx of new customers they were promised.

And so, with little acknowledgement of any biz hardship or inconvenience caused to residents & small bizz . . . KC threatens to repeat the cycle on a much bigger scale IF Federal funding comes through . . .

  1. TKC, do not forget about structural damage.

There are more older building, apartments and homes along the proposed main street line. Really hope that city council is considering people on fixed incomes and lower income residents who might be forced out on the street if their living spaces are damaged during this process.

    1. It's not going to be the construction that forces people out, it'll be the higher taxes they won't be able to keep up with.

you'd think this would remove some of the homeless around the area, sadly it's probably only going to create more.

    2. I bet the streetcar is really going to create a lot o business for the laundry mat. Also all of the drug bars on main. More Pepsi for everybody!

  2. ^^^ And what is YOUR plan for boosting the local economy. You people are happy to see KC struggle with no sign of hope for future economic vitality. If it were up to you and the Citizens Against Virtually Everything, KC downtown would still be nothing more than surface parking lots.

  3. That's a big "IF" about the federal funding.

  4. 11:07 shut up Chris, taxing people to death is not the answer, remember, you won’t have a job when sLIE is gone.

  5. The construction of this boondoggle will be bad enough. Wait till the Main Street businesses figure out that the toy train does nothing but impede traffic, eliminate customer parking and raise the already sky high taxes.

  6. 11:07 “if it were up to us” it is you effing moron, the rest of the city would look great if it wasn’t for your small sighted vision of downtown only, sure downtown looks great but the rest of the city is a shithole, thanks to crooks like sLIE and troy

  7. 11:07 “You people” really? You say that like we are the scum of the earth

  8. You can say Downtown looks great, but the cheesy bastards won't even fix the potholes in the streets there either. Just try driving Downtown, you'll see what I mean.

I think their "vision" for Downtown consists of an Island of tall shiny new buildings surrounded by a moat, with no vehicular traffic allowed (except streetcars and delivery trucks), and then an outer ring of parking lots four or five blocks deep (full of Tourist's cars, of course) surrounded by the dreary slums full of desperate people that they seem to want the rest of the City to become.

    Well, they're screwed!
There will be NO FEDERAL MONEY under this administration, and they will all be out of office and off the bribery and graft titty by the time any money to carry out their petty little schemes becomes available. Their "Legacy" is FAILURE!

Ummmm. Have you driven down Main Street lately? It looks pretty vibrant to me. Now, fix the fucking potholes, suckup.

  10. It will disrupt business again in ten years when they dig up the tracks to make room for the growing fleet of autonomous taxis.

  11. ^^^Try driving Admiral, or 12th, or any other east-west street downtown, Hernandez! You know, the ones nobody takes photos of?

And I don't have to fix potholes, buttboi - unlike your Boss's Developer masters, I pay taxes so the City will fix them, that's what City Paychecks pay for!

Now go get your shoeshine box, De Mayor is about to wake up from his nap!

I pay taxes, too. But the potholes are not getting fixed. Maybe Dominoes Pizza will fix them for us, like they're doing elsewhere.

As for Admiral or 12th, maybe a streetcar would help there (as opposed to the Downtown to the Plaza route, which is already well served by many but lines), but last I heard, that's not even being considered.

  14. Team Slie is not considering anything that impedes his agenda. Slie does not want to hear what anybody else has to say. Just look at the way people opposed to the toy train were threatened and shut down. Now Go4KC, Chris, wants to know why the people are so negative about Team Slie's agenda. Well Chris and team Slie look into a mirror.

True then. True now. Way to disprove your own "exclusive question," dumbfuck.
