KSHB-TV LOOKS BACK AT THE DEADLY KANSAS CITY RACE RIOTS

41 ACTION NEWS PARTNERS WITH KCPT TO AIR SPECIAL REPORT ON THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS HISTORIC EVENT

April 4, 2018

KANSAS CITY, MO - KSHB-TV, Kansas City’s 41 Action News Station, in collaboration with KCPT-TV, will broadcast a 30-minute special report looking back at a unique chapter in Kansas City’s history. “'68: The Kansas City Race Riots” airs Monday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. and documents the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the subsequent days of civil unrest in Kansas City. On April 9, 1968 frustrated citizens took to the streets in protest of the slow pace of civil rights reform. As a result, six people, all African-American, died and several others were hospitalized.

“At 41 Action News we like to look for projects that allows us to use our journalism to take a deep dive into issues important to our viewers. We also look for projects that allow us to live up to our mission to tell stories you won’t see anywhere else,” said Carrie Hofmann, news director for KSHB.

The special report also includes dramatic video from the disturbance, including a number of historic images from the LaBudde Special Collections at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the Missouri State Archives. In addition to the special broadcast, 41 Action News will take an in-depth look into the riots

"We wanted to give Kansas Citians a chance to reflect back on this challenging time and how it has impacted where the city is today and what still needs to evolve,” said Hofmann. “Fifty years later, we are having the same debates and the same problems in our community.”

KCPT’s broadcast airs April 9 at 8:00 p.m. and will include a roundtable featuring Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, Kansas City Mayor Sly James, and former city council member and longtime community activist Alvin Brooks.

    1. One of the worst riots KC has ever seen. I was at the talk that was recorded and it interesting. A lot of the people on the panel openly blamed the police for starting the riot. 50 years later the current department doens't look at all like it did back then but it was very obvious there was still a great deal of leftover hostility.

  2. Will be interesting to see how KSHB ratings respond to this. Because it's not baseball or football season, there has been a lull in local advertising for TV. This should put make them a bit more competitive.

    1. Baseball season started almost two weeks ago, idiot.

  3. This was the point when nobody could deny that KC is a racially divided city, more so than most of the nation.

  4. They didn't steal as many TV's, way to heavy then. Truth!

  5. Maybe they’ll riot again and burn their own houses and business’s down again!

  6. In 1968 at least there was some attempt at rationalizing self-destructive criminal behavior, even though it was terribly damaging to the rioters, looters, and arsonists own community.
Currently, senselessly killing one another day after day has no rationale offered whatsoever.
Not exactly the progress that MLK might have hoped for after all the years of courage, leadership, and sacrifice.
Without a vision, the people perish.

  8. Checking out the MLK stories all over TV tonight I noticed one thing. MLK is way darker than any of the talking head blacks they come up with to express their feelings. Heck many are not as dark as I am in the summer and I am a German. Even liberal shows on blacks are shade sensitive.
Another example is the ABC new "comedy" Blackish. Check their skin color out. The title is very appropriate.
Snowflake racist pinkos eating left wings. Hilarious !

  9. Everyone wants to be part of an entitled class. Leverage over your competitors. From Elizabeth 'Pocahontas' Warren to actors, minority contractors and non-racial grievance groups. In 50 yrs when the demographic tables turn, it will stay the same, or worse. Only the terminology will change.

  10. They weren't riots. It was looting and arson. There would be a lot more to steal now. Hair weaves, 22" wheels, more liquor stores, I hope they do it again and the body count is higher than 6.

  12. Brookside Bob4/5/18, 1:13 AM

An interesting special, for those of us who lived in KC at the time. It's hard to see it as a fond memory. It was an outright rebellion and plunged the entire city into fear. Did not help the legacy of a man of peace and was started by opportunists looking to capitalize on a crisis.

  13. Oh, hell "Brookside Bob", I have fond memories of it - there were some really memorable "Curfew Parties" thrown, since nobody could be out on the streets and everybody had to stay overnight.

Nobody took it seriously except for the "police, politicians and press", it was obvious that everything was being stage-managed (thanks, SCLC and Rev. Cleaver), and the looting and burning were being contained and directed to selected businesses.

It was a masterful political move by one Black Political Faction to weaken another, culminating many years later when Cleaver spit on the grave of someone who dared to stand up to him and fought him bitterly for many years, and named the freeway that his opponent had fought him so hard and for so long on as the "Bruce R. Watkins Freeway"! (Talk about hatred and spite, whew!)
