Democratic State Senate Candidate Hillary Shields Outraises Opponent Mike Cierpiot by 5-to- 1 Margin

LEE’S SUMMIT – Last year, Democrat Hillary Shields came within 1,980 votes of upsetting Republican lawmaker Mike Cierpiot in a special election for Missouri’s 8th Senate District. This year, in a strong sign of Democratic momentum, Shields outraised incumbent Mike Cierpiot by a more than 5-to- 1 margin.

Shields, a longtime volunteer with the AFS foreign exchange program and community leader from Lee’s Summit, raised $43,451 for her campaign in the first quarter of 2018, while Cierpiot raised only $8,325.

The overwhelmingly strong fundraising numbers are an indication a blue wave may be coming to Eastern Jackson County, drawing more attention from across the state.

"Hillary's strong fundraising numbers reflect Democratic enthusiasm we are seeing in Eastern Jackson County and throughout the state," said Stephen Webber, Chair of the Missouri Democratic Party.
Bringing in 532 separate contributions from almost 450 unique contributors, over 90% of Shields’ donations came in small amounts, with an average donation of less than $82. In contrast to her Republican opponent, who raised over 94% of his funds from lobbyists and PACS, over 99% of Shields’ donations came from private individuals.

“The outpouring of support we have received from throughout the community has been amazing, and I am so thankful to everyone who has believed in us,” said Shields. “Every day I am encouraged by all of the people who are getting involved for the first time. The people of the 8th District see what’s happening in Jefferson City, and they recognize that we desperately need a change in leadership.”

Shields main areas of concern include protecting funds for local, public schools, providing better services and programs for seniors and disabled veterans, and growing the economy by improving our infrastructure . . .
