Fox4: Missouri prisoners will no longer be allowed to smoke starting Sunday

Deets:

Smoke-free Missouri prisons are required after a prisoner who was originally sent to death row for strangling two women complained about second-hand smoke . . . As a result of the lawsuit, all tobacco products including chewing tobacco and vaping devices will no longer be sold in prisons. They also can’t be used anywhere on campus by inmates guards or visitors. Visitors and corrections officers will have a designated smoking area off of prison property.

In an EXCLUSIVE TKC INTERVIEW Fr. Nick Charles O'Donahue Farley of the Midtown KC Our Lady Of Perpetual Suffering Church explained the effort . . .

"Addiction is an affliction and we are offering this assistance to children of God in suffering no matter the heinous crimes the have committed. Helping those in need is part of the mission of holy mother Church and this effort should not only make life easier for inmates but also reduce the possibility of violence among those who are sure to suffer from withdrawal symptoms in the face of this drastic change. The Lord works in mysterious ways and sometimes by way of a smoke break."

  1. Must be a Candy Ass Inmate population and of course the mandatory bunch of do gooders must get involved. KDOC went tobacco free around 2002. Damn, how did they accomplish this without the churchy people of Kansas getting involved?

  4. My guess is this fellow has spent very little if any TIME "behind the walls". Does he have a program for the inmates addicted to Opiates and/or Meth? The MDOC can look to the KDOC to see how they accomplished going tobacco free more than a decade ago. The big driver is to improve inmate health and thereby reduce health care costs. KDOC had no riots or increase in inmate violence when they implemented this program.

  5. My initial reaction is that it is going to create a lot of discontent because of withdrawal and the fact that since tobacco products have been commercially manufactured that they are a form of currency within the walls of a prison. I like the actions of the church on behalf of the inmates to make thir lives more bearable and support them.
If the guards and administrators have a designated smoking area off campus (campus????) then why don't the inmates have one "on campus", sounds like discrimination to me.
It's one of those goose and gander things.

  6. Uhhh... Bob, the Guards are there because it's their JOB, the Inmates are there because they BROKE THE LAW!

But I agree, if this sort of thing goes on, being in Prison is going to become such an unpleasant experience that nobody will ever want to go back there... wait a minute!
