Kansas City Biz Leaders Hope Prez Trump Can Make Harley-Davidson Great Again

A desperate effort to save local jobs that seeks assistance from the White House might be asking too much . . . Not sure if a guy who sold mail-order steaks can turn around the horrific branding and lackluster biz strategy of this old school company. You decide:

Union turns to Trump for help saving Harley-Davidson's KC plant - Kansas City Business Journal

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) continues exerting pressure on Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE: HOG) in an effort to try and save the Kansas City Assembly Plant, but the company remains firm in its plans to shut it down. The latest effort is a direct appeal from IAM asking President Donald Trump to intervene.

  1. Even Trump cannot save a product that's basic design is older than he is. He is business man not a miracle worker.

  2. Just to make sure, this is IAM, whose President, Bob Martinez, issued a memo saying how sad they all were with the election of Trump? Yeah, that was my thought as well. Here's the thing, I don't have any hate for the Union workers, they are doing what is necessary to secure high-paying, good benefit jobs to take care of their families; I do the same. The Union leadership is corrupted to the core and I suspect doesn't represent the majority of their workers' political interests.

All that said, Harley's problem is the bikes are built like Harley's. Too much competition in style, performance and dependability departments from an array of other mfgs. typically at a lower price point.

  3. Like he saved the Carrier jobs in Indiana? You are fools if you think Trump gives a fuck about you, he only cares about his 1% overlords. Those jobs aren't coming back and when Harley eventually closes its Pennsylvania plant and moves 100% of operations to Thailand then you can kiss Harley goodbye. The once proud American company has lost its way, gotten greedy and will soon totally destroy its bond between loyal bikers buying a product no longer made in America.

Oh sure, all those million$ spent on already highly paid gummint agents and private lawyers for that ridiculous Russian sideshow would have been better used for boosting commerce amid Great American workforces. Sorry, the dismissed Harley personnel can thank the actual crimmies like the Comeys and McCabes, who are going to make out fine with their big paying book deals. While too many decent job prospects for our nation's middle-class goes up in smoke, the shining city on the hill is fiddling away the funds and the futures of decent workers who want to prosper and provide for the benefit of their families, communities, and their nation.

  5. Can't believe the unions have the cojones to beg the POTUS to help after they supported Clinton. Guess Slie and car wash Cleaver are no help.

  6. The big orange Rufus lied. He promised to end the carnage in our American cities. Trump lied people died.

  7. The United Steelworkers Union, which represents workers at the Wisconsin and Missouri plants, called on Harley-Davidson to call off its plans to build in Thailand.

This decision puts in jeopardy one of the few remaining genuine U.S. brands,” the union said in a statement.

The New York Times was first to report Harley-Davidson̢۪s plans in Thailand.

  8. Funny, just like the story of the democrats that voted Kay Barnes in and when she put section 8 in a concentrated area all along Armour and caused crime to go up so high you couldn't get through a night without dead bodies in the street or at least 3 drive by's in an hours time, then the democrats in Hyde Park called Roy Blunt and wanted help. Fortunately he blew them off. Then Kay Barnes called Hyde Park residents and wanted money! ROFLMAO.

Harley honchos are trying to sell the fake news that more of their production is moving overseas, PRIMARILY, to be nearer the growing buyer numbers in Asia and Europe. Citing efficiencies for costs controls and for reducing environmental impacts, H-D asserts those objectives as major factors in deciding on the Thailand location for manufacturing. A major profits achievement is to eliminate tariffs on sales outside the US. But, they're playing it not as a focus on their bottom line, but on keeping prices attractive to bike enthusiasts.

Did anyone expect Harley to admit the Thai LABOR COSTS in front of saving the planet and pricing competitively as INCENTIVE for moving out and away from MADE IN USA? Hmmmmmm...

  12. HOG is a profitable publicly traded company on the NYSE and in the S&P 500. Not owned by Kawasaki.

Trump will never turn down a photo op to make himself feel important, needed and loved. Just keep in mind they will be empty promises. His words mean nothing.

That said, Trump already promised manufacturing jobs would be saved under his watch. If he can promised to save 18th century coal jobs, he could do something about a product that is an American Icon and still popular worldwide. Trump owns the job loses occurring now.

Dismissing HOG as a failed company and product is the biggest lie told by commenters here. They are simply screwing workers to increase executive bonuses.

  13. 11:50, you just made "dismissing HOG as a failed company" the second biggest lie.
