Although fines for a treacherous walkway can reach $100, city officials say it's usually handled with a reminder. "We don't have inspectors who go around looking for sidewalks," said Chris Hernandez, the city's communications director.

Car fire early Friday slows westbound I-435 near Holmes Road
A car fire early Friday slowed traffic on I-435 near Holmes Road. Emergency crews were called about 6:45 a.m. to the area. Initially, two lanes of traffic were blocked because of the emergency response. The damaged vehicle remains on the shoulder of the highway. All lanes of traffic reopened just after 7 a.m.

The National World War I Museum and Memorial on Friday announced a big debut for its $5 million Wylie Gallery. The new 3,500-square-foot space inside the museum, set to open on February 23, will feature one of the world's largest war-related paintings: John Singer Sargent's Gassed.
