Tonight's basically the last night for KC Restaurant Week and once again the reaction has been horrible.
The topical complaints we've heard:
- Too expensive.
- Bad service
- Limited menus
- Again, way too expensive.
This event was organized to boost local biz during the Winter doldrums but the reaction has been the opposite of what was intended. Bad planning and so much over-promising amid a spate of hype has left a great many local foodies angry if local social media chatter is any indication of overall public reception.
And so, feel free to offer suggestions for improving this event because CLEARLY organizers need help.

ReplyDeleteWe ate at Cafe Trio twice during restaurant week. It was a delight each time. Matt was the best!
ReplyDeleteWe ate dinner at Aixois, 55th & Oak, and it was remarkable. Delicious, and extra generous. $33 price, for $46 of food, with a wonderful wait staff that didn't hurry us from our 7:15 res and we lingered till 9:10pm.

The pate starter is incredible, a more exotic choice than a salad. And the two entree choices were trout and chicken, each $20 on the regular menu, but they then offered a third choice, Coq au Vin, which was $26 on a separate special menu. Finally, chocolate mousse or creme caramel.
Nothing to improve at Aixois. You have thru Sunday night to stop whining and get a great value, try somewhere you've never been. $15 for lunch, $33 for dinner. 120 or more restaurants.

DeleteOnly geezers complained because everyone hates them! No wonder they got shitty service! Too expensive? Please these pants-shitters are cheap! Here’s a little secret i’ll Let you in on geezers. Every restaurant has a second menu they keep hidden. It looks like the regular menu in every way, except the prices listed are 25% higher than the regular one. They give this “special” menu to tables of blacks and geezers because they don’t tip! This way the staff gets a good tip dealing with the dregs of the restaurant world..blacks and geezers!

ReplyDeleteKansas City Restaurant Week has been a hit and miss far back as I can remember on food and maybe service. Your better places as Tracy points out one, are as a rule will shine through with a good dining pleasure for you. Myself I have found is if the place is a good dining experience the other 51 weeks of the year it will be for this week as well. This wasn't a week for cheap food it's a week to expose dinners to places they might not ever go due to cost to see that it is worth the extra cost for some fine dining.
ReplyDeleteBut sadly bad service is ruining to often what should be a good dining experience and to that a lot of the blame falls on managers and owners. They are either not addressing the issues or allowing bad staff to remain that should have been let go. Training as one can see at many locations isn't happening either. I knew one owner who use to train his staff upwards to a month with another server till he thought they were ready to fly solo. Not many places will do that kind of training anymore.
As for prices I have always been a you get what you pay for sort of person. If Golden Corral is advertising a all you can eat Prime Rib dinner for 15.99 and you go there expecting prime aged beef you're just showing what an idiot you are. But if I go to say the 801 Chop House and order their top prime rib cut I will pay almost 60 for that treat. For that I expect not only a good meal but good service and I get both. Yes maybe three or four times a year I will splurge on a great meal, dress up, the whole nine yards just for no other reason than to pamper myself and the little lady some. But we always go where we will receive good food and service and enjoy ourselves and yes those places do exciste in Kansas City.
By the way I don't call a half ass sports bar a place to expect fine food and service. If a place has TV's hanging off the wall all over the place and the wait staff wear t-shirts who can't hear you over the music then fine food might not be the exception there.If a place pushes their beer menu more than their food menu you're probably only going to get average food at hopefully at an average price.

Best meal and service I had all week was at the Capitol Grill . The Bristol wait staff was rude , and the shrimp made us puke . Mangianos in Overland Park was awesome all the way around as was J Gilberts . PLAZA 111 steak was tough as horse meat and service was awfully long and not polite at all .

ReplyDeleteI think the upscale restaurants do a good job on putting together menus that offer a good value for the rest of us that don't have the means to dine out often.
Cafe Trio was excellent, as usual.
Those running Restaurant Week should make sure that standard is followed by every restaurant. The menu offered should represent a minimum 25% off and be approved before being allowed to participate. The $33 dinner menu should be items that total at least $45 normally. I don't see how Pinstripes Bowling, Blue Moose or Waldo Pizza (all good places) fit this model.
It would be nice if there was some drink specials too. It doesn't have to be happy hour prices. Just a few featured items with a small discount.
I don’t understand Restaurant Week. Do people not realize these restaurants are open year round with a complete menu?

DeleteThe Trump economic boom has given good jobs to all the ambitious career employees in food service leaving the less motivated, criminals and tired students to do all the work. Tough times ahead in restaurant industry.
