For this evening as the election fight reaches a crescendo, here's an alternative perspective on the topic of the new airport vote tomorrow . . . And here's what we notice . . .
THROUGHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA AND IN THE KANSAS CITY BLOGOSPHERE THERE'S AN UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL OF OPPOSITION AGAINST #NEWKCI!!!
So far the polling has been too close to call but this sample of commentary from local bloggers is interesting given the wide cross-section from different political perspectives and various parts of the metro who all seem to have their suspicions about City Hall Question #1 promises.
Take a look:

It's just a matter of time before it's announced AMAZON #2 will be coming to a neighborhood near you. Why not? Everything in Kansas City is FREE!!!! FREE STREETCAR ... FREE AIRPORT.... FREE EVERYTHING! Oops, Not so fast. Have you seen your property tax bill?
Interesting Theory From Tracy Thomas
Why vote NO? Ballot language says "demolish (both) existing terminals". Would you buy a car or cell phone with a contract that says, first we crush your trade-in--and lookee! here's a picture of what we MAY give you to drive in two years.
The new KCI plan is clearly a scam. or a big screen TV or a cell phone based on such a sketchy "contract"--no plans, no budget, just a promise based on a 30 DAY OLD watercolor sketch without furniture or people!
South Kansas City Speaks Out
A Better KCI or a Better KC?
As everyone knows, the Mayor of KC is pushing for a yes vote tomorrow so he can put delivering a new airport on his resume. In an ad he says, "this city is taking off to become a world class place ...

Boss Pendergast Would Have Been Proud of #BetterKCI - The Sentinel
In 1935, legendary Kansas City "boss" Tom Pendergast set his Ready-Mixed concrete company to the task of paving over Brush Creek, a project that would stand as Kansas City's most gratuitous for eighty years until challenged by the launch of the downtown streetcar line and the proposed new single terminal at KCI.

KCI/MCI: Still Convenient, Still Beautiful
This was made some time ago but it's still true today. VOTE NO! tomorrow, folks, on Question 1 here in Kansas City. Kill the more than one billion dollar boondoggle that is a new, single terminal airport. Then, let's hold the Airport Authority accountable.
You decide . . .
I'm voting maybe.
ReplyDelete8% turnout. Tops.
DeleteA swing of 2-3000 votes either way will determine vote.
ReplyDeleteThis passes in a walk away 60% voting YES!
ReplyDeleteLeaning heavily towards a yes vote but I don't believe that a terminal won't cost non-flyers anything. Whoever wrote the ballot language was pretty clever. They say the city will only use 'revenues derived by the City from the operation of its airports and related facilities.' What are related facilities? Money derived from hotels, transportation, restaurants, concerts, conventions, or other stuff? Aren't they all kinda related to operation of an airport since the airport brings in people that need those other services? Who knows for sure. I think it's not as clean as it seems, but we need it.
ReplyDeleteIt can wait 5 months and get it right.

ReplyDeleteWhen the KLM pilot lifted her flaps, my wide-body generated so much thrust that I pushed her in the cockpit!!!
^^^ Easy, Didn't Mom just change the sheets? ^^^
ReplyDeleteThe airport can wait until bow tie the clown gets out of office, this is only a legacy project not the true needs of the city, water and sewer, roads, crime now those are true needs not his ego driven airport. Have any of you seen how much your property taxes have gone up yet??? The killa city portion has jumped 200%
ReplyDeleteWhat a corrupt shit hole. How much did that toy train cost? Now think of that times 100.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, the town looks like shit. Violence everywhere. This is Tammany Hall fuckery.
Leave KCI Alone. It works. It is utilitarian and is PAID FOR.
ReplyDeleteRepair it, it will be fine.
Prayers, chuck
ReplyDeletesave kci convenience and remodel and update it.
ReplyDeletevote no!
As chaotic, incompetent, and downright dishonest as the process that has gotten this issue this far has been, when it passes today in a very low-turnout election, what will be happening in the months and years ahead will make all this seem like the good old days.
ReplyDeleteThe actual financial issues have yet to be resolved.
No one really knows what a new terminal will even look like.
There will be contracts for demolition.
There will be contracts and subcontracts for construction.
There will be huge cost overruns.
And whatever is actually built, KCMO will be stuck with operating and maintaining it for decades.
And who will be making all those critical decisions, some of which actually require expertise, good judgment, attention-to-detail, and oversight?
Sly and the gang, who have demonstrated not only their incompetence, but have clearly shown their complete contempt for the public throughout this sorry affair.
The iceberg is still ahead.
Very interesting. See you guys at the single terminal groundbreaking.
ReplyDeleteJust got back from voting YES. It is done.
ReplyDeleteIf chuck is against it, I am for it. Going to vote yes right now. Thanks chuck!
ReplyDeleteFrom the Hipster Manifesto:
ReplyDelete"Most of us cannot afford cars. (Starbucks only pays so much, you know.) And those who can afford cars do not like them, so we have decided that such car-friendly facilities as Kansas City International Airport are much too convenient and must be replaced with, for example, a single-terminal airport so that when our hipster friends come to visit us we will be able to hold our heads up and be proud of the fact that we will have an airport that is just as inconvenient as those in larger cities. If you do not like this, you can always move."
Vote yes. Make a hipster happy.
Written like a pants-shitting geezer who fears change and hasn't left his house in decades. Hate to break it to you pops, we aren't going back to the the 70's no matter how much you wish it was so. Adapt or die. Guess We know which you will choose.
ReplyDeleteWe'll outlive you. Our (paid for) houses are warmer than your bridge, troll.
ReplyDelete^^^How does he get the internet under the bridge pops? Ugh. Go away. You've shit yourself again. You stink!
ReplyDeleteHa Ha, ya got triggered bigly!
Delete12:03: Like any under-the-bridge dweller, he goes to the library, you know--the big building with books and computers and so on... . He would go to Starbucks, but he can't afford their coffee.
