Amid conflicts and court intrigue, the new Kansas City Single-Terminal is an inevitability according to City Hall insiders.
To wit . . .
FAIR WARNING: INSIDERS FEAR THAT MAYOR SLY AND COUNCIL LADY JOLIE JUSTUS HAVE COMMITTED KANSAS CITY TO BUILD A NEW AIRPORT EVEN IF THE NOVEMBER ELECTION FAILS!!!
This isn't just about the heritage of Mexican fatalism and dark humor which powers this blog but a very real breakdown of local Democracy that started with rigged transit votes and now underlies the proposal of the biggest public works project in modern KCMO history.
Here's the word . . .
"Burns and Mac winning this bid is a foregone conclusion, it's rigged. But it gets worse. Look at the ballot language, it's perfunctory. If they lose in November it's just a matter of a simple majority council vote to start airport construction and they already have that . . . I'm not saying this to drive people away from the polls. People should vote with their conscience. But don't get too invested in the turnout because they are ALREADY working on staring new airport construction. Ask Mayor James, the single-terminal isn't dependent on this election and he has yet to admit that he'll abide by any decision from the voters."
And so a debate about ethics in this busted process that OUR BLOG COMMUNITY STARTED now has bigger implications.
The question of the new airport isn't about stupid issues like food options inside the gates or TSA lines . . . The decision is really a glimpse into the fate of Kansas City Democracy that could now be under total corporate control thanks to the top elected official at City Hall who is more puppet than elected leader.

If Mayor James tries this, he should be recalled. In fact, it would be nice if the mayor would tell voters that he will abide by their decision in November. Thank you for posting this TKC.

ReplyDeleteAnd the public never even becomes aware of most of them, day after day.
Occasionally this crap sees the light of day, usually brought by someone who feels they were dealt out, and the airport fiasco is significant in its under-handedness as well as its size.
In this case you really have to wonder what has been promised in return for the electeds giving away so much and trying to allow Burns and Mac and others to so take advantage of the taxpaying public.
But's it's gone on for years and there's no end in sight.
What commitments have been made for Mike's hotel?
The P&L District bond payments from the general fund run through 2030.

Don't forget that Sly James controls the careers and continued employment of all the people who will be counting the votes!
And he's smart enough to have the ballots to support this result already prepared and in storage until needed.
I'm sure that the City will somehow get what they want, but what will really decide this issue is LOW voter turnout. People who can vote will not bother to show up at the polls.

ReplyDeleteSly won't engage the public as they are not having it. He is working over the folks he has ultimate control over. None of this passes the smell test and this will come to a head. KC Star not undressing this regularly and pushing back on inappropriate conduct is really too bad.
ReplyDeleteDon't be surprised if this gets more contentious after the purposefully undemocratic way the votes are designed to have few vote. The Dems blast the Reps when they do the same, but their disdain is rather selective.
We would feel better about the home town team if they weren't part of rigged deals that feel like they are done by the home town crooks.

I know that if the voters don't say yes to a new airport, the City will begin a calculated plan for letting the airport fall apart. This way, everyone will start screaming about the conditions and demand that the taxpayers cough up.
