TKC READER: WE LOVE KCI . . . AS IS!!!

Mayor Sly's town hall tonight was really more of a rally. Accordingly, here's a bit of REAL conversation on the topic . . .

My favorite airport in the world

I confess that I have not followed the minutiae about the proposed new airport and who revised what bid etc. etc. I feel that the opponents of the “new airport” have lost their focus. We should not care what some people say the airlines want, or what the politicians want, or how this or that would be funded. The point is: WE LOVE KCI JUST AS IT IS . . .

SO: What we need to do is to orchestrate an ad campaign to defeat this madness at the ballot box. We need to hire an ad agency to design a campaign to make Kansas City voters see this madness for what it is, and VOTE NO.

  1. We don't need a NEW airport. We need a BETTER airport, one that fixes the problems noted by the flying public. The airlines will continue to use KCI no matter what we choose. They don't care if the terminal(s) have cool shopping or gourmet restaurants. They are looking for a place to land and park their planes. The rest is nonsense to them. Saying that the airlines will go elsewhere is stupid. Where? Johnson County Executive Airport? Omaha?
Vote NO on knocking down a perfectly good airport, and YES to sensibly fixing its' problems.

  2. I'm torn on this, I think the new jobs the airport would create are good and I like that thought of making KC more accessible.

But the way they are doing this airport just seems corrupt to me. There is very little say from the public and I don't think the contractors guiding the process is fair. we need a pause on this thing, definitely.

  3. Mayor Sly James Airport = NO

  4. They could have been reasonable. There are three terminals, one of which is closed. Each terminal could be completely renovated and either another circular bus or a tram added to take care of passengers moving between terminals.

The empty terminal could be used for expansion or to attract another airline to the airport.

  5. JCIA Johnson County International Airport will be a reality. As it progresses behind the scenes and will completely implode KCI and leave is as the local "Fairyland" was- we will see the demise of the house of cards.
Think water rates are high now?
    Think crime is bad?"
Think 1% "earnings tax is bad now?
Don't think the Chiefs are moving across the state line?
Don't think a major employer is announcing a move soon?
Welcome JCIA... let's put the clowns out of business. Just vote no.

  9. save kci convenience and don't waste taxpayer money. how? remodel for a tenth of a billion. common sense.

  10. I'm a local, love KCI and it's convenience. With that said, it's dumpy, set up like shit (all the food and drink for the most is in front of security) and just has a second rate, hayseed feel to it. Extremely underwhelming and disappointing I'm sure to anyone from a different/larger city.

  11. Do people really make important decisions based on the social status of their airport? It's not "cool" enough, it's not "welcoming", it doesn't have USB chargers for the love of ... My word, what ridiculousness. Restaurants are outside of security because it is less than a few minutes to get into the secure area. AND if people really want to meet someone at the airport to eat, you don't have to go through security to go to said restaurant. If you want to grab a bite to eat with a relative AT THE AIRPORT before THEY fly, you CAN with the current setup. With all these wonderful proposed amenities BEHIND security, you would NOT be able to get in there without a boarding pass to just hang out. The boarding areas are not the primary hangout, they are the cattle pen before you get crammed on a plane.

If USB outlets are the problem, someone at the City write up an RFQ and I'll come put those in for a fraction of a fraction of $1 billion for a new terminal, with less ramp capacity, BUT IT HAS USB CHARGERS!!!!

  12. Mayor’s KCI Town Hall Meeting:

What a joke and an absolute hour of misinformation, not to mention in front of a whapping crowd of 60 people. It is clear that Mayor Sly James has drunk his own “Cool Aid” and believes his own "propaganda" regarding the KCI Terminal issue. You would think that after 5 years of dealing with this issue he would be more informed! NOT!

He continues to spout the new Single Terminal will create 18,000 NEW JOBS but there is not one creditable document that supports that statement. Yes it will generate an increase in economic revenue but not the $2.5B above what will already be generated by the existing Airport. To renovate and improve the existing 66 gate terminal with 47 jet bridges would also create jobs and generate an increase revenue but does he even recognize this possibility NO! How our Mayor can promote destroying the “Golden Goose” (KCI), a facility that has generated a stream of revenue for decades not only to KCI but to Kansas City Downtown Airport, KCI’s reliever airport, is absurd! The Mayor, his City Council and the Attorneys hired to manipulate the process to build a $1.3B Single Terminal is criminal. To support building a Single 35 gate Terminal at a cost of $1.3B which will reduce Airline gates by 50%, obligate the Kansas City to a $85M dollar annual payment, that will stifle airline growth, turn the airport over to the Signatory Airlines with a new concept called a Residual Airport Airline Agreement is what is on the ballot in November. Yes the City is about to turn over KCI to the Airlines that will require the Airlines to agree on any future capital improvements on the airport. Now you know why Southwest is now in agreement!

Aircraft operations at KCI over the past decade have gone from 1,100 a day to 400 a day. The Air Traffic Control tower has been downgraded from an ATC-10 to an ATC-8. Enplaned passenger levels are below what they were in 1999. Yes 1999!! The Aviation Department has not successfully recruited any significant new airlines or airline service with a surplus of airline gates and airport capacity that trumps many airports in the country. Then I ask the voters how will a new $1.3B Single Terminal that significantly increases Airline cost ($85m annually), increase ticket cost, and reduce airline gate capacity from existing used gates of today make KCI a better airport.

  17. My wife and I routinely head to the airport to eat at that BBQ joint up there. You know, whatever-its-called? Same when we're flying to Florida. I always to try book a layover in hotlanta to enjoy the fine amenities at their enormously oversized/priced flying hub down there.
