KANSAS CITY AIRPORT FINANCING STALLS WITHOUT VOTER APPROVED PLAN!!!

Here's what's missing on the subject of the airport financing that has become a quest for power and not a real solution for the future . . .

Very few denizens of this discussion want to put a plan in front of voters without strings attached.

Mayor Sly's no-bid private financing deal has crashed and burned and the corporate campaign to restarted and rig the effort looks like it'll be meeting with a great deal of resistance.

Meanwhile, Council Lady Katy's effort offered a "public option" with very few deets . . .

Accordingly, Tax Fighters expressed their frustration on this front as well . . .

CFRG: Councilwoman Shields wants $990,000,000 up front!

I think we all are missing what is going on here. Councilwoman Shields is asking for another G. O. Bond deal. Give them $900,000,000 and they will decide what to build and show us all the plans at a later date. Aren’t we putting the cart before the horse? The voters in Kansas City should demand to see the final plan before they approve it or any financing public or private. When will City Hall learn? They say they don’t think the voters are stupid then they float something like this. To cap it off, Councilwoman Justus is going to float her own financing plan shortly WITHOUT ANY PLAN. Just give them the money. Talk about a circus! Maybe we should just put up a tent where terminal “A” is.

  1. More bond money with no guarantee that it will be spent on what they said it would be spent on, fool me once shame on them , fool me twice shame on me

  3. "When will the city ever learn?"
Mayor and council, one after another, and year after year, do whatever they want, move money by "emergency" ordinance, promise the voters one thing and pull the 'ole financial switcheroo after the fact, and conduct fixed elections like the streetcar travesty and issue campaigns based on bogus claims and outright lies run by people like Glorioso, and the voters just keep taking it on the chin and electing and even re-electing the same old kinds of "politicos".
    The real question is:
WHEN ARE THE VOTERS IN KCMO EVER GOING TO LEARN?
You're getting precisely the kind of local government you deserve.

  5. shields is actually right to put forward the public financing option. if a new airport is to be built, public financing will surely be the most economical and common sense way to finance it.

an expert financial advisor would be a good idea in a process with so much smoke, mirrors, and baloney.

  6. Hey, just trust us. We'll never lead you wrong and we'd only spend that $900 million dollars on what we say we will .

  12. I don't understand why we seem to already have committed to having a KC based firm do the work when there is literally hundreds of firms across the world who could deliver a stunning model for KCI.

If you are going to tear up something that works and replace it with something 1/3rd the size it better be made by a world famous firm and it better be fucking amazing.

Burns and Mac looked like the imagined design for a Tulsa regional airport, not for a city paying 900 million for something it doesn't even need.

Actually scratch that isn't it claimed to be 1.7 billion after "matching funds"? It seems over the head of our local yokel firms.

  13. I am 100% not joking here:

The city should hire Mark Funkhouser as an advisor on this airport search. The voters need someone to sit down and explain in plain detail how interest rates work and why Burns and Mac's deal is a sucker trick.

His one skill was explaining the ones and zeroes, wasn't much good at anything else.

  17. Notice how the 800 million wasn't enough and they go right to needing another billion for the airport and 350 million for the streetcar extensions. Enough from the BS artists, who were caught more or less red handed rigging the game.

The Public is starting to look at them like BS artists every time they hear them talk. Tony, post the star interview with Sly where he looks like he is squirming when they more or less point out he got caught rigging the game. Note UMB backed off on publically backing the Streetcar, and many view the Airport as a rotten fix. The power of the public purse, boycott any business associated with the Burns and Mac fix, that is how you change things. Oh, and where are you FBI as the guarantor of integrity in city government, they flagrantly do this stuff all the time and you can't seem to understand assuring integrity is important. Why should Johnson County defer to any of the mediocrity of KCMO governance. They shouldn't.

Pathetic Sly and Reardon whining about needing regional cooperation, right when they really are setting the fix for their boys. Way to go Rockhurst mafia. The real issue is just how sloppy they are and misguided on priorities. Sly is a bloviating pretender.

  18. This is what a set of Rockhurst mafia BS artists look like in action, but setting the fix, which they now act like they never did, is in fact what they were doing and are now still trying to do.

    http://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article157068204.html

Boycott anything that touches support of Sly James on this, out of principle it is a no integrity move, but aw shucks, they got caught. These are mediocre front men, who pretend to be statesmen while they rig the game, disgusting.

I am sorry everyone but can't you see that Ms. Shields has filed that change to make everyone put up their financing or shut up. She wants to make Burns and Mac sweat. Remember BernieMac supported her opponent big time. It is a brilliant move that has to piss off BernieMac. They want total cost to make millions. Thank you Ms Shields for being on our side.

  23. Don't know the politics, but Shields is supporting a common sense approach.

The crony proposal's private financing isn't "free" and would like be much more expensive than a normal city's approach.

    ReplyDelete
  24. where is the local newspaper's analysis of private vs. public, wherein they interview financial experts, not politician know-nothings?

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK, try to follow the numbers.

First, Airport Bonds have NOTHING to do with the GO bonds approved in April. Airport Bonds are NOT paid for by the City and have no impact on the City's credit. Airport Bonds are paid for ONLY by airport revenues -- airline fees, parking, etc.

Second, Airport Bonds -- because they are tax-free -- can sell at 3-4%,not 5-6% -- a savings of $420 MILLION over private financing. Since there is no Free Money Fairy, someone will have to pay that difference.

Like her or not, Shields is the only person on the Council who has real executive experience building things -- a Jail Annex and the financing of Truman Sports Complex. And, the Council has promised to choose a design, etc., BEFORE the November vote -- so voters can accept or reject it.
