Airlines Dictate Terms To Kansas City Voters

Local airlines offer their election influence amid the clandestine effort to raise their fares by way of a new airport. Take a look at this round-up:

Airlines' warning: Don't delay deciding KCI's future - Kansas City Business Journal

Kansas City should not delay resolving what the future holds for its airports because the longer it takes, the more it jeopardizes its business with airlines there. The Kansas City Star reports that the airlines serving Kansas City International Airport (Code: MCI) sent an email to Pat Klein, director of the Kansas City Aviation Department, warning that they don't want an election delayed past November.

yea, yea, yea.

Sounds like the airlines are trying to interfere with our elections

the business journal's fake news of a survey citing 38 minute wait times at KCI means they're part of the circle of cronies fixing a new airport.

the airlines want to inconvenience travelers to make it easier on themselves and to maximize $$$$ while doing so.

the airlines are not a neutral, good-faith arbiter of airport decisions.

Good lord! You're not too bright are you? Every day you post some drivel about the glory of a outdated and delapidated building. Look- the airlines realize the facilities at KCI are antiquated and inefficient. They have businesses to run and decisions to make regarding operations that require, in some cases, years to execute. They are simply saying enough of the back and forth, make a decision regarding the future of the airport so we can plan accordingly. No bathrooms, no food options and no seating during peak times. Parking in B terminal can be impossible at times and the price is already higher than that of several other larger airports. Not a good product for their customers and the city locals who actually use the airport more than once a year to fly Spirit to Las Vegas for the weekend. Did you know the airlines pay usage fees for the airports they fly into? STL continues to have flights added, including International, and that city is falling apart whereas KC has been enjoying a renaissance of sorts. This is another example of small-town thinking when there are some who realize the need for a new facility to move forward into the future if we are to compete for more flights and more business opportunities at the airport. MCI has a strategic location that could serve as a connection point and also has the real estate to become an actual hub rather than a secondary market. It simply will never happen given the current terminal situation. What do I know though, I am only an airline captain who has seen the good, bad, and ugly of aviation services and know squarely where MCI falls.

Your witnessing as well as being on the receiving end of corruption at a level not seen before.

There is nothing subtle about desperate men.

TL/DR. City Hall: I know there's nothing wrong with it and experienced travelers love it. The hell with it! If it ain't broke spend a zillion dollars on it anyway!

frequent fliers like kci because it's convenient for them.

airlines don't care much about flyer convenience.

they care about profits and convenience for themselves.

Who cares what any of you dolts think. None of you "municipal planners" is going to be consulted-so your opinions don't count for squat. Don't give me the whole "transparency" line of B.S. either. If I showed you the plans, associated municipal finance syndicates, terms conditions and the like, none of you would understand what you're looking at. None of you. You are all unqualified to comment or speak intelligently about what the city needs, what is a good deal for the city, or how a project like this gets built. All of you..every last one you..like to bitch and call names. That's what everyone on this blog does. Bitch and call names. Just look at the comments..some of the dumbest, most awful people in our city post on here and none of your opinions is worth a shit. So this terminal is going to be built and really what I'm saying is...who gives a fuck if you like it or don't. You are fucking powerless to do a thing about it. So carry on with your racial hatred, outright lies and stupid fucking comments. When I want your opinion about municipal finance, I'll give it to you.

1:10 & 2:35: Kansas City is a large market. Are either of you saying the airlines will stop flying here if we don't build them a new airport?

No, I didn't think so.

As of now that I know of, international flights depart out of Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Dallas, and Houston. Do you really think anyone is interested in making Kansas City another international flight hub complete with all the TSA, Customs, etc. personnel and equipment that would require?

No, I didn't think so.

Mayor Bullhorn needs his shoes shined, City Hall slave. Get on that.

KCI is a very convenient medium-sized airport for a medium-sized city. It is what it is and so is our city.

KCI works well.

Save KCI!

Vote no on the crony airport plan designed for airlines not travelers.

City Hall, airline, and contractor employees, welcome!

Hint: You'll be more persuasive with substantive points.

Since when do the airlines get to make decisions for the taxpayers - and I mean the folks who will really be paying the bills. The Business Journal should publish the signed agreement with the airline folk where they promise to pay for the new airport. What? You mean there isn't an agreement? Gosh, I thought we had one. At least that's what all the newspapers are saying. The airlines are going to pay. Nope - show us the official document.

the business journal is fun to read but one always has to keep in mind who its audience is. in this case, it's the cronies who want a new airport. they are not only the audience but some are big advertisers.

Did anybody else find Helling's op-ed excessively timid?

For "airline captain" @1:10pm
First, it's clear from your comments why pilots may be good at flying airplanes, but not so much when it comes to public decisions or managing businesses.
A "renaissance", mostly actually publicly-subsidized schlock, of downtown KCMO is hardly an economic or population driver for the metro, much less the region. And the flying public for KCI mostly doesn't come from there either. In fact, it was recently reported that the greatest user of the airport was Fort Leavenworth.
Any chance a terminal project might be considered on its merits was thrown away long ago by the project's proponents who, for whatever reason, couldn't give a straight answer or tell the truth if their lives depended on it.
There won't be larger airplanes used or certainly not international flights unless and until the market is of sufficient size to support that, and that's not likely to happen for a very very long time. In fact, KC's center-of-the-country location works very badly against international flights originating here, as it makes much more sense to fly full smaller airplanes to Chicago, Dallas, or one of the coasts, fill up a much larger airplane, and head for Asia or Europe.
This has been a scam from the beginning and the whole Burns and Mac fiasco has made it much worse.
Hope your next landing is better.

Spoken like a true Burns & McDouche assmunch intern. You're so well spoken and loyal, you're obviously Burns & McDouche material. You are promoted to licking nutsacks.

Go build a new airport in Johnson County

Fuck the airlines. United made that cunt from JoCo pee in a cup.

Airlines are businesses. Do they want a minimum amount of comfort? Sure. KCI -- RIGHT NOW -- offers as good a deal as most places. Pop into Reagan/National, where Southwest flies more flights out of fewer gates with one bar and one restaurant -- and no kiosks, just sundries on the wall! We have lost of early morning departures and late night arrivals because KCI is a cheap overnight parking lot for planes

The proposal to privately finance will COST the airlines @ $400 MILLION in additional payments and provide no additional benefits to them or the City. No airline or combination of airlines has agreed or will agree to that boondoggle!

Anonymous said...

Save our gates!

Anonymous said...

Today's airlines may want fewer gates to keep out potential competition. There are all sorts of gate games played by airlines at airports.

Airlines want a new airport for their own reasons.

1:10 don't know what the hell their talking about. Kci just needs updating. Not a billion dollars worth of work. Best airport to fly out of or land at. Everything is easy there. Get a lift dumbass.

Fuck that airport. KC desperately needs a new giant water park slide and you morons are worried about a fucking airport. Damn redneck fucks!
