Harry S. Truman born in Missouri, May 8, 1884

Harry S. Truman, the nation's 33rd president, enjoyed a successful career in the U.S. Senate before becoming vice president in 1945 and, months later, assuming the presidency following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman, who was born on this day in 1884 in Lamar, Missouri, often said he spent the happiest 10 years of his life as a Democratic senator from Missouri.
