END OF AN ERA: MR. BROOKS RESIGNS FROM KANSAS CITY POLICE BOARD

Another important local transition . . .

KSHB: Alivin Brooks has resigned from the Kansas City Police Board of Commissioners after being elected to the Hickman Mills Schools Board.

Clearly, more experienced leadership is needed at Hickman Mills where the infighting among politicos, teacher, parents and administrators has become just as volatile as many issues confronting KCMO police.

Developing . . .

Why can't these old grifters just go play bingo where they can do no harm?

Brooks is a pussy grabbing coward.

Brooks has no business being on the Hickman Mills School board. He has NO experience in education. He will just be a yes person. The problem with South Kansas City is the same people that created the mess will not go away.

Not here to suggest that Brooks is qualified or not. But those with experience in education have virtually destroyed our inner city schools. Logic would suggest we try something new.

8:08 Am is a fucking degenerate coward. Hiding anonymously behind a keyboard calling someone else a coward is irony at its best. Brooks was a cop in this city for a lot of years..he's no coward. You are troll, now go back to your trailer. Fucking bitch.

Brooks may bring some sanity to the Board in Hickman Mills - hopefully he really wanted the job - given that word has it he was late for his interview with the current Board. Unofficial report is that he and Chandler were late, and only got an interview after the Board took a recess and John Sharp called them to remind them they had interviews. Another candidate was also late but wasn't afforded an interview - so, if this is true - has Mr. Sharp been at it again? Both Brooks and Chandler are respected citizens, hopefully they both want to be there.

Another politico power grab.

He helped put KCPD in the toilet, he'll take HMSD further down the sewer.

HMSD is already down the sewer. Every time you think it has hit bottom, it goes even lower.

Here we go again John Sharp. The number one reason South Kansas City and Hickman Mills School District is what it is today. John Sharp has destroyed everything he has been involved with SKC, MAST and the Hickman Mills School District. John sharp is only looks out for himself.

Agree with a lot of the comments here, Alvin Brooks has had his day and he has worked as a leader. It's time to develop new leaders and give them the tools and support they need.

Thank fucking God! I personally don't think he can harm HMSD, but everything else he touches becomes fucked up, like the Police.

has the police board been a success?

^^^ Good point.

Bout time, he was a part of the problem

That's what happens when you over stay your welcome! He should have been gone a long time ago when his term was up.

Hickman Mills has so many problems - one on semi-known black dude isn't going to make a difference. The district can't turn things around when the vast majority of it's families are struggling and seem to have no way of reversing their downward spiral of debt, eviction, low paying (or no) jobs, etc. By not being able to educate the children the downward spiral will continue. The teachers see it on a daily basis, the administrators just want to use it as an excuse for failure and justification for wasting money. Solid neighborhood schools will do far more than magnet schools. Wasting money to gut and rebuild former HMHS to make two buildings in one doesn't do anything to help students. The Board needs to set some priorities and it should be on finding ways to help students by helping families. No easy answers and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before another Board member doesn't get his or her way and walks away.

Sounds like Brooks can't make Hickman Mills schools much worse. One more unqualified incompetent coon wont fuck it up too bad.

What a mess in HMSD - most of it supposedly caused by the low socioeconomic status of families/students. Carpenter said many times HM students can't compete on the state and national level because of their socioeconomic status - it's been a familiar refrain from him and works well as an excuse to explain failure on his part. There truly is a struggle for most of the families with school aged children in the district; high rent, low paying jobs, poor public transportation, poorly educated, evictions, crime, etc. and that all leads to more of the same for the next generation. How can the cycle be broken? Instead of the superintendent, board, and community wasting money on frills (pet projects) more resources need to be focused on helping families - which in turn helps students succeed. More FSL (Family School Liaison) positions may be a place to start. Trained professionals who can help families find needed support and resources. Making elementary schools neighborhood schools vs. magnet schools creates a more local focus and resource center. IF the problem is low socioeconomics then focus on the problem!
