TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY INSIDERS SKEPTICAL OF DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL SPRINGTIME GROUNDBREAKING AND CONSIDER 'BETTER DEAL' ALTERNATIVES!!!

Proponents of a Downtown Hotel Convention hotel promised a Springtime groundbreaking but behind the scenes Kansas City insiders still doubt the ability of the project to garner investment.

"They just haven't had any luck making this thing work," said one KCMO Insider familiar with the deal. "They'll come back to us for more money, or more time but we need to start thinking about other opportunities out there and maybe getting a better deal for taxpayers."

  1. Sly pushed this one through with the threat of a lawsuit from the developers.

But if they're still dragging their feet than means we can get out of it.

All of the deals on catering and labor make this a shaky deal anyway.

    1. No more spending on these tourist projects, if we're going to talk about infrastructure with the oncoming bonds, then we should get busy fixing that stuff instead of building a hotel.

  2. Vote NO. In April NO $800 million for bonds.

  8. Financial bubbles have proven that hopes and dreams can keep the market irrational longer than most of us can remain solvent.

  9. The logic astounds me. Use imminent domain and annex to increase the tax base. Raise property taxes. Raise sales tax. Put a city tax on car rentals, hotels, entertainment. Give tax breaks to failed businesses. Rake in bucks from the casinos. Create and earnings tax. Tax, Tax, Tax! Doe the citizens of KC benefit one iota from the revenue? Hell no. The city takes the revenue they desperately need and waste it on consultants, lawyers and plans to build pet projects.

Does the city use the money to rebuild the sewers, fix the water supply, clean up Brush Creek or improve the general quality of life for the citizens and non citizens to pay for this shit? Hell NO! Instead lets build and maintain Sports Complexes, Arenas for damn concerts, Hotels for grifter conventions and spend tons suckering tax payers into voting for shit they will almost never really benefit from.

What the hell is wrong with KC just becoming a nice peaceful little cow town with a focus on maintenance of infrastructure, clean streets and neighborhoods and working to make the city a pleasant place to live? What is the purpose of this exercise of building a bigger, more grand city that everyone can be proud of while dealing with gangs, drugs, thugs, crime broken streets and bridges, grade "B"entertainment that is priced through the roof and constantly seeing more taxes to pay for the failed dreams of the last pack of rats at City Hall?

Stop with this Emerald City bullshit and just make KC a safe, practical, convenient place to work and live. Fuck all this dreamer boon shit, pet projects and wasting money and resources. God Damn does anyone in this town know what a fiscally responsible budget is? We are not improving anything. We are just creating more crap that we will either be forced to maintain for decades or grant tax breaks and make costly deals hoping someone else will take care of things.

  10. the problem is that downtown's success as an urban space requires a critical mass.

so the streetcar and the hotel and other amenities are part of the whole.

    1. The problem is that bread and butter issues are being ignored while we build toy after toy to try to conjure up this magical 'critcal mass'.

  11. The tipster is correct,we need to find a better deal on this one. Why put the city in debt for a hotel. Let's shop around some more.

  13. Perhaps everyone interested in discussing the need for a new 800 room convention hotel should meet & discuss the best way forward.

I suggest that they meet at the Marriot -- the 900 room convention hotel that we already have. One block from the Convention Center. Lots of parking.
