TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! AMID DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY PARKING CRISIS: BIG 12 FAILS TO REBOUND DECLINING STREETCAR RIDERSHIP!!!

Thanks to a photo sent by our KICK-ASS TKC BLOG COMMUNITY we learned that the toy train streetcar hasn't enjoyed much success amid the Big 12 Tournament.

To wit . . .

BIG 12 PATRONS CROWD DOWNTOWN PARKING RATHER THAN RIDE THE UNRELIABLE AND ALWAYS TARDY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR!!!

This Saturday afternoon shot provides a bit of context and shows the mode of transit struggling to attract a crowd even in the best of circumstances.

To be fair, the biggest complaint from toy train riders is that "The Streetcar doesn't go anywhere!" and patrons aren't enjoying the River Market or Union Station OR the P&L District right next door when they can just grab a hot dog at the stadium for much cheaper. Supporters of the extension hope a bigger route will offer for variety for potential riders despite the novelty of the mode of transit quickly wearing off.

While supporters of this line offer phony boosterism supported only by taxpayer subsidized economic development schemes . . . Our blog community comes with PHOTOGRAPHIC FACTS and a slice of life for this cold Saturday.

  6. It snowed all day - and yet, mysteriously, there's no snow on the ground nor is the pavement wet in this photo.

A reasonable person would conclude someone posted a photo and misrepresented it.

    Well we're not that dumb.

  7. I see wet foot tracks from the door so see, you're the dumb one.

  8. That's probably piss from a negro, negroes being well known to shit and piss on public transit.

  11. It's not wet tracks it's dried vomit that has a shine to it.

  12. The train has a deflector shield that keeps all the snow off of it and blow dryers mounted on the side to keep the streets dry.

  13. 7:00: Snowed all day? Maybe in your apartment, trolley boy, but have you actually been outside? It snowed just a few hours. Temps were at or above freezing. There's a little snow on the grass, but the pavement and sidewalks are dry. But you can believe we had a blizzard and Obama tapped Trump's apartment if you like.

I heard that a huge contingent of Iowa State fans were going to ride the streetcar for a while and then return to their hotels to make BMs of their PF Changs.

    Big city vibrancy!

  19. The photo is nice. but go to the streetcar website, the ridership has fallen off since July of last year and it was really bad during the winter months.

As for yesterday, it was cold out. Don't blame most people if they took a cab or an Uber.

As for the discussion, it's sad to see so many of you locked into your thinking. We need to open up discussion of the streetcar not just these people who are paid to protest or support regardless of the facts.

And I think we should acknowledge that we need to do all that we can to help the streetcar that's running right now. We have invested millions into and it should work.

More ideas from the Department of Clear Thinking:
People elected to govern KCMO, but who spend all their time playing make-believe as economic development wizards, were sold a bill of goods by the urban futurists, academics, consultants, and others who would benefit financially from diving into the streetcar trend so "we wouldn't be left behind", and now it's EVERYONE'S job to try to make a terrible mistake successful.
    Really?
What, ride up and down Main Street just to boost the ridership numbers?
Invite friends from out of town so they can waste their time downtown?
The NEED was never there from the beginning and the novelty for suburban families and their kids wore off last summer.
The streetcar will be pointless drain on the city's general fund until the days the tracks are ripped out.
It's Sly legacy, along with the other many hundreds of millions of public dollars that have been squandered in the downtown pipe dream.
When you've created a product that down't have customers, it's not the public's job to buy the crap anyway.
    It's a loser.

  21. 3:31: Are we supposed to fill the new hotel to make sure it's a success, too? Maybe also the jails?

    ReplyDelete
  22. 3:31 am, why should we invest more money in an obsolete technology of fixed rails and overhead wires? We have a Max bus that is totally faster, more flexible than fixed rail, and cheaper to run than a streetcar. We don't need a streetcar when we have a Max bus that people who like mass transit use. You could have free shuttle buses from hotels to the Plaza if it was only about tourism. Any investment in mass transit needs to be for high-speed light rail, not a slow-moving streetcar for white people.
