Sen. Claire McCaskill: A ban that makes America less safe
President Trump’s entry ban on immigrants and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries – and refugees from anywhere – is making our country less safe, and has compromised our most sacred values.
This ban has handed a potent recruiting tool to international terrorists by communicating that America is at war with Muslims.
And in addition to refugees, it’s left behind even those Muslims who put their lives, and the lives of their families, at risk to help American military servicemembers in war zones. This weekend, on U.S. soil, our government detained and handcuffed an Iraqi translator who risked his life to support U.S. troops. It’s appalling.
The notion that our government would prioritize one religion for admittance to our nation flies in the face of our sacred, founding values of liberty and freedom of religion.
We cannot, and I will not, sit idly by while this happens. As the top-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee, I’ve demanded a meeting with DHS Secretary Kelly. I’ll be fighting, and I urge you to pick up the phone and call the White House, write letters and emails, march – use your voice to speak out for what’s right.

The travel ban does not include countries which have caused problems with terrorism for the US. Most of the 9-11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia which was not included. We shouldn't just issue travel bans Willy nilly. It fucks up peoples lives for no reason and only causes more resentment toward the US unnecessarily. Many MDs come to the US from all 4 corners of the world, for example, and serve communities which would otherwise have no medical care. If you or a loved one had a serious illness you would want access to a medical doctor.

I don't expect a doctor to build bomb vests but I do have a healthy skeptisism when I see mile long parade of military age men pouring into Europe just before major terrorist attacks occur

7:23, how fortuitous that you should bring up our need for more trained doctors. But the culprit in denying entry to doctors is Obama, not Trump. When Obama stopped the Cuban refugee "wet foot/dry foot" policy, he also squelched a program that gave preferential refugee treatment to Cuban doctors. Obama reasoned that the Cuban people needed those doctors (heck with the American people I guess.
ReplyDeleteAs to the remainder of your post, the seven countries mentioned in the Executive Order were the same seven that were identified in legislation signed by Obama. While it would have been great to extend the entry ban beyond those countries, the administration felt that they needed statutory authority as a basis for the EO. This is of course in contrast to Obama, who issued executive orders based on nothing but his personal sense of kingship.
Out of 3000 159 was detained The last administration there were far more detained for various reasons why is she making a big deal of it now this may be her last term
