The upcoming Presidential election has many Kansas City Catholics confronting a crisis of conscience given the horrible options presented.
Accordingly . . .
CHECK THE LATEST WORD FROM THE KANSAS CITY CATHOLIC HIERARCHY DISCOURAGING VOTER ABSTINENCE AND TELLING THE FAITHFUL TO CHOOSE THE LESSER EVIL!!!
Here's the word . . .
Bishop James V. Johnston: "I encourage you to vote. It is very important that you exercise your duty as a Christian citizen in the selection of our leaders. This year is very unusual in that the two main candidates for president are so obviously flawed and viewed unfavorably by a majority of the country. Many are discouraged and some have told me they may not vote because they so dislike both candidates. I believe this is a serious mistake. At the very least, we should vote to choose the candidate that we believe will do the least damage."
This is a provocative stance and the only good news in this statement is that the first instinct of many locals is to take a somewhat Zen approach and just sit this one out . . .
Still, in order to provide more contradictory advice than the catechism itself . . . The Kansas City cleric directs his flock to a document concocted by the United States Conference Of Catholic Bishops for reference: Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship
It's a good starting point for the holier than thou and a look at the handiwork of a group that hosts some of the same community who helped to move molest-y priests around to keep them out of legal trouble.
Nevertheless, this word from on high encouraging voter participation is hopeful as more Americans opt out and lose faith in both the two-party hegemony dominating American Democracy and organized religion in general.

ReplyDeleteBut read the text the Bishop has offered more closely and then look at the more important consequence of this election. The Bishop is talking about the Supreme Court choice confronting the next president.
Hillary will no doubt suggest a new Supreme Court justice who supports abortion. Trump would do the opposite.
Therefore, look at where Catholics stand and where the candidates stand and it's easy to see who is in direct opposition.
Methinks the good Bishop is asking voters to hold their nose and vote Trump.

And their new director is an ex episcopalion leader who is gay and who is now going to focus on LGBT issues.

ReplyDeleteIf you're going to change the definition to where one's ethnic origins are, then "Native Americans" aren't native, since their ancestors came from somewhere else, which would make them the original "illegal immigrants."
With respect, Bishop James Johnston is merely a man holding an executive position within the local Catholic Church hierarchy. In America, I think it's safe to say that few individuals are still closing their eyes and blindly following the dictates of the church.
