KANDER CONTINUES TO MISLEAD MISSOURIANS ABOUT HIS STATE HERITAGE
Whether it’s a new family in the neighborhood, your seat-mate on an airplane, or a first-time business meeting, the question that launches many brand new relationships is, “Where are you from?” It begins a dialog and provides a starting point for a deeper understanding between two people. Where you are “from” is often a matter of pride and, in a meaningful way, is a partially defining characteristic.
It is exceedingly rare when people fail to truthfully answer this most basic of questions.
Since 2008, Secretary of State Jason Kander has repeatedly claimed to be a “fifth generation Missourian.” He lists his hometown as “Kansas City” in his official state biographies. In speech after speech, Kander continues to claim his multi-generational roots in Missouri saying, “I’m a fifth generation Missourian, and I promise I will never forget where I came from.” Just a year ago, he recounted his background as a “Missouri native” on St. Louis Public Radio.
Surely no candidate for high public office would completely fabricate their ancestral heritage when the facts are so obviously discernable. Apparently, they do. Let’s take a look.
1. A 2012 Associated Press biography discloses that he was born in Overland Park, KANSAS.
2. In 1999, Kander graduated from Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, KANSAS.
3. From 2000 to 2004, Kander was registered to vote at his family’s home in Shawnee Mission, KANSAS.
4. On August 16, 2003, Jason Kander and his wife, Diana, were married in Johnson County, KANSAS.
5. The Kander’s purchased their first home in Missouri in February, 2005.
At the heart of American politics, there must exist a level of trust between the public and public servant. If Kander’s claims are true, he would be the first “fifth generation Missourian” in history who was born, resided, educated, registered to vote, and married in another state. Quite an accomplishment!
