Throughout the nation there's a push back among metro areas against expensive tech streetcar that hasn't lived up to hype about the economic renaissance they would spark.

Sadly, because Kansas City elected leaders stopped counting votes and now just listen to their consultants and donors, warning of dire financial circumstances doesn't resonate among the cabal pushing outdated transit on 12th & Oak.

ReplyDelete25 years of a progressive property tax increase and 1% plus tax increase on basic cost of living is obscene.
Many homeowners are struggling with upside-down mortgages , homes being over taxed through fabricated assessments and high crime in midtown.
I think City Hall's much need obligation bond ,the DART TAX ,and even your city bond issued should be voted down . A 1/3 mile swath of a Street Car Expansion CID is ridiculous. Mainstream,Westport,Plaza ,KCAI and UMKC WANT this expansion ,let them cover the cost.
Kansas City, no voting allowed.
ReplyDeleteWhen they start charging the same fare as a bus, the amusement park riders will go away. Then they won't have overcrowded streetcars. And they will make thousands of dollars in revenue instead of zero revenue. Might even pay the cost of driver salaries and the overhead wires electricity. Problem solved.
ReplyDeleteSly and make-believe chancellor Morton at UMKC have promised the Chamber swells that the streetcar will be extended to run from the UMKC campus to the new, and also promised, downtown arts campus for the college.
ReplyDeleteAnd, like all the other heavily-subsidized "development" crap and misappropriated tax money that's been siphoned away from basic services to finance legacy toys like the streetcar, the Chamber will get what they want.
Public projects in KCMO are rarely designed with the best interests of the public in mind. Rather, it's a matter of who gets what out of them.
That's why the airport is halfway to Omaha and the stadiums are in the middle of nothing.
It's hard enough to try to correct past bad decisions, but even worse to see new ones made every day.
And KCMO taxpayers will have to live with these mistakes, and pay the debt on them, for many decades.

ReplyDeleteKC Port Authority is only second to the streetcar when it comes to wasting citizens money. Over a year ago they announced yet another plan for river front development, “Port Authority CEO: Riverfront development is really going to happen.” Today the land stands barren after the Port Authority invested about $5 million of its money (should that read our money?) in installing the necessary infrastructure to support the mixed-use project. Now we are told the streetcar will save Riverfront Park.

ReplyDeleteThose ridership numbers are so bogus, they are laughable. I guess David Johnson thinks if you just keep repeating a lie over and over people will believe it. I see the empty trolleys going through River Market all week long.

ReplyDeleteAlmost certainly before the line is done, autonomous shuttles will already be serving that route. Note the politicians distancing themselves and now it is anonymous on who is leading effort for it.
ReplyDeleteCertainly not effective transit for people that live in KC, and opportunity cost and comparisons will be well detailed so public knows what is being decided on this time. Now we get to see the smoke and mirrors of the financing show. Ought to be interesting to see that undressed.
