As we're been reporting throughout the past month . . . Today a Kansas City judge will hear public testimony about the pros & cons of streetcar extension.

You decide . . . Or in this case a judge makes the call on the follow-up to what library dude Crosby Kemper III says was "one of the most corrupt elections in Kansas City since the Pedergast era."

    Testimony will be heard in the courtroom of Judge J. Dale Youngs at 415 E. 12th Street, 6th floor. Anyone wishing to testify may sign up for a spot beginning at 8:30am. Testimony will begin at 9:00am.

  6. When the streetcar folks were selling the starter line, they promised it would bring businesses & jobs. Since that didn’t come true, now all they can do to try and sell an extension is make wild claims about ridership numbers. If all those folks need to go from Union Station to City Market, let them take the Max.

  8. Why does anyone pay any attention to the streetcar ridership numbers when it's FREE?
    Imagine the "success" you could have at a grocery store with your customer counts and merchandise moved out the door if you gave it all away.
    The streetcar is an amusement park ride whose novelty has already worn off and the 84% of metro residents who don't live in KCMO, much less live, work, or visit downtown, have far more interesting and enjoyable things to do.
    Like maybe take the kids to Worlds of Fun.
    And the embarrassingly ridiculous claim that 24 million tourists visit KC every year and that they're your target market is laughable.
    It's amazing that a little group of "transit enthusiasts" can stampede the empty-headed gang at 12th and Oak to waste even more money on this, particularly given the obvious and underfunded basic needs throughout the city.
    Doesn't anyone at city hall own a pair of "big boy pants"?

    in other words, lay the infrastructure for real urban density in the urban core, not try to connect the urban core to suburbia.

  16. Just came from the hearing. Same old same old. The judge will approve the TDD because that precedent has already been set. The big question is will he allow a mail in ballot or not. If he does then there needs to be a lawsuit filed about disenfranchising the voters. An issue that entails using tax money from all citizens of KC should be cited on by all Kansas Citians. If even one piece of city property is in the expansion TDD then KC taxpayers are paying for streetcar expansion and should get a vote.

  17. I think the opposition focused way too much of their general dislike of streetcar over other transit and not the legal question of the TDD. The precedent that one could float an election, have it voted down by a 60-40 margin and from that create a new jurisdiction that purposely avoids the people that overwhelmingly voted against it is INCREDIBLY problematic. In fact, I'd argue that federal court strike down of NC Voter ID/Suppression laws argues against this very practice.

    No one argues that though. Just "We should have buses" which isnt the legal question.
