TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! EXCLUSIVE QUESTION: IS IT TIME FOR CHIEF FORTÉ TO RESIGN AFTER REMARKS ENRAGING RANK & FILE POLICE ACROSS KANSAS CITY METRO?!?
In a story that earned EPIC FREE SPEECH public discussion FIRST here on TKC, Kansas City Police Department Chief Forté is caught in a firestorm over his comments about so-called "unreasonable fear" of African-American males that he claims has precipitated recent deadly shootings by law enforcement.
Beyond the walled-garden of social media remember that the conversation started off with KCK complaints that the Chief's comments were making a bad situation worse. And then, later in the day the KCMO FOP added to the complaints with more criticism of the Chief and a defense of their collective bargaining rights that were allegedly derided by the top cop in a recent interview.
Later in the day, the KCPD Chief responded with a blog post explaining his position and doubling down on the discussion of controversial topics:
KCPD Chief Blog: I'm proud of our officers & will keep addressing difficult issues
KCPD Chief: "I do respect others’ opinions, and I apologize if anyone was offended by my comments about police-involved shootings of black males. I said some of those incidents were the result of unreasonable fear and poor training on behalf of the police. I was in no way referencing any particular incident or any particular department. Over the last several years, we have seen many officer-involved shootings of black males throughout the country. These have created outrage, and to ignore these sentiments and give no thought to what police can do to improve the situation would be irresponsible."
The statement deserves to be read in its entirety.
Still, here's the question that is circulating but everyone, but our KICK-ASS TKC BLOG COMMUNITY, is afraid to ask:
GIVEN THE HISTORIC RATE OF KANSAS CITY RISING CRIME AND CHAOS IN MIDTOWN, QUESTIONS REGARDING OVERTIME PAY AND NOW RAGE FROM RANK & FILE POLICE ACROSS THE METRO . . . IS IT TIME FOR KCPD CHIEF TO STEP DOWN?!?!
Behind the scenes and under the anonymity provided by blogger.com . . . Many readers believe this is a relevant question. Among supporters of the KCPD honcho, the weakest argument in his defense is that KCMO has avoided social justice upheaval and rioting along the lines of Ferguson & Baltimore thanks solely to the efforts of the Chief . . . This idea was recently touted in the Wall Street Journal but the rhetorical exaction is weak, impossible to prove and demeans the efforts of just about everyone else in Kansas City.
OR . . . It's entirely possible, but unlikely, that the Chief's apology and explanation have quieted his critics.
Whatever the case . . .
THE TKC EXCLUSIVE THIS MORNING IS THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN A FEW INSIDERS SUGGESTING THE POSSIBILITY OF AN END TO CHIEF FORTÉ'S TENURE AMID THIS CURRENT CONTROVERSY!!!
What's interesting and something that most newsies are missing is that the KCMO FOP makes an important argument that Chief's controversial remarks aren't simply the result of one interview but reflect a line of thinking of the Chief's Administration and have been repeated throughout community meetings in recent weeks and amid tough times when domestic terrorists and criminals have increasingly targeted law enforcement.
