We noted the launch of the Clay Chastain light rail petition weeks ago and now his latest news blast takes aim at the calming voices of the local NPR affiliate and the their allotment of taxpayer subsidized airtime.

Public radio's "Up to Date," with Steve Kraske, is unfair, unbalanced, and afraid.
KCUR's "Up to Date" radio show, host Steve Kraske, is a public sponsored (NEA) media outlet. Yet Steve, and his producer Danie Alexander, have twice turned down my request to appear on their public radio show to inform the public about a public sponsored light rail initiative slated to be placed before the voting public in November.
This outrageous and biased conduct, by a public radio station against a light rail petition ballot measure initiated by the voting public of Kansas City, goes against the mission goal of public radio which is to provide both sides of important public issues to the public.
I know for a fact that Steve Kraske has not only had on his radio show proponents of the city's downtown streetcar line, but has also written columns for the Kansas City Star boasting about how great the 2-mile trolley line is. I guess Steve and Danie feel the light rail petition is a threat to supporters hopes to extend the streetcar line to UMKC! The fact is, both plans can mutually enhance each other.
KCUR is unfair because some of its employees do not want to inform the KCUR listening audience about the light rail ballot initiative because they feel it threatens the proposed extension of the city's streetcar line;
KCUR is unbalanced because the public has the right to hear a discussion on public radio involving both public transportation proposals.
KCUR is afraid because some of its employees are scared the light rail plan will capture more attention and win voter approval over an alternative plan to extend of the city's streetcar line to UMKC (where public radio operates from).
If KCUR's Steve Kraske and producer Danie Alexander continue to act like the light rail ballot initiative does not exist, and ban its designer and leader from their show, then their inherently biased public radio show should be banned because it no longer serves the public interest.

Kraske ignoring you is not a bad thing at all. He's, at best, a pseudo journalist. Best known for hatchet jobs on Mayoral candidates, he is not exactly in line for a pulitzer.

ReplyDeleteKraske is a Democrat, and with his radio program serves as a mouthpiece for the political status quo Democrat Machine in KCMO.
Can you recall a single instance whereby Kraske has ask a series of hard questions to a political guest?
Kraske figured out a long time ago that you can dramatically increase the length of your media career in KCMO by not rocking the boat, flattering officeholders, carrying water for the political/business community, and generally just going with the flow. That it's a disservice to readers/listeners, is not a serious consideration.
6:11, Kraske's politics don't matter in this case. Public Radio and public television in kansas city have not ever allowed anything but government approved opinion on their stations.

You can not possibly expect these public radio stations to be much more than one huge mooch pretending to be authorities on a myriad of subjects they know nothing about. The answer is ignore the lower end of the broadcast band and attempt to break the compulsion by moving on to a real radio station.
ReplyDeleteSteve Kraske was on Week in Review a few weeks after the Streetcar opened. He said that he and his wife rode it and they immediately thought it should be expanded to the Plaza. So he's clearly biased. I wonder if he and his wife ever ride a bus that drives the same route as the streetcar and also goes to the Plaza?

KMBZ am or fm, both are way behind KCUR in the ratings, KCMO am or fm, again way behind KCUR in audience level, the radio consumer speaks daily by choosing KCUR over the corporate media. KCUR radio professionals don't answer to the latest advertiser whims, so learn something today listen to a radio station that is kicking the rest of KC's talk outlet to the curb.

ReplyDeleteKCUR doesn't beat any commercial FM stations in the ratings except one sub-channel and the rest are public, Christian or AM. So KCUR is no ratings giant by light years.
