Jason Kander, my choice for Senator is, guess what, a lawyer. Lawyers have a lot of power in our government. And what about the lobbyists. Lawyers are in the money and power making business, for sure.
"Are lawyers up to the task of running this country? I have my doubts whether any profession measures up. I do not know what profession is immune from greed and deceit. Money complicates everything . . ."

Aside from the topic at hand, let me first congratulate the writer for this well-written submission. Frankly, it's not in the pattern of previous postings by Lynne Bratcher, so it leaves me wondering who wrote this piece.
ReplyDeleteNow, on to the topic. Ms. Bratcher (or the ghost writer) seems to have never before considered the nature of those ascending to political power in this country! Yes, of course, President Obama is said to have earned a law degree from Harvard University. Just in our bi-state region, we know that Governors Nixon and Brownback, U.S. Senators McCaskill and Moran, U.S. Representatives Smith, Yoder, and Pompeo, as well as KCMO Mayor James, along with seven KCMO Council members, are all attorneys. This negative trend has become even more exaggerated in recent decades.
Let's stop here for a minute and contrast the current candidates for President/Vice President:
Hillary Clinton went to Yale Law School, while Tim Kaine went to Harvard Law. Both of these law schools are of the elite, politically-connected insider favorites.
Donald Trump went to the Wharton School of Business, while Mike Pence went to Indiana University School of Law.
Is being America's top spokesperson, representative, and commander-in-chief like managing a business or trying a legal case?
Perhaps the most interesting line in this posting, is the following: "I have successfully rationalized my dilemma and have convinced myself that my ethics are intact."
It sounds like a tacit admission of guilt, or a subtle confession, does it not?
To get to the heart of Ms. Bratcher's point of the legal profession having a bad reputation among the public, all we ask is "what would happen if others behaved like contingency fee attorneys?" Can you imagine a patient presenting at the emergency room and being told that if the operation is successful they'll owe 50 percent of their salary? If they die, there will be no bill due. Or the university student who signs an agreement waiving a percentage of future earnings if they graduate and find gainful employment? If they dropout, or are left unemployed after graduating, they owe nothing to the school.
One of the many problems with the legal system is the fact that it's a monopolistic construct designed to propagate and enrich it's membership, while excluding the broad public and keeping them ignorant of the inner workings. They have their own schools, their own language, national and local bar associations for every jurisdiction, and the profession seeks to codify all aspects of society ensuring that their members have limitless avenues in which to practice. Please consider the following statistics:
