Kansas City toy train streetcar cheerleaders should be comforted by their fake and unverified numbers but a simple glance at the streetcar in the morning, after lunch and evening hours reveals that the novelty has worn off and fewer people are riding now that the Summer tourist season is complete.
To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY ACTIVISTS CONSIDER DEMANDING AN INDEPENDENT AUDIT OF THE STREETCAR INCLUDING RIDERSHIP GIVEN THE CLEARLY RIGGED NUMBERS CITY HALL IS FOND OF TOUTING AND THE RISK OF ANOTHER $200 MILLION BASED ON HYPE AND CONSULTANT PAYOUTS!!!
What's even sweeter is that any politico signing on to the second corrupt TDD effort could find themselves in the same situation as former Councilmen Dick Davis and Jim Glover who were ousted from office for their streetcar enthusiasm over neighborhood concerns . . .
But the point here is simply one of observation . . .
The streetcar numbers are akin to the same stats from Visit KC that claim an IMPOSSIBLE 24 million tourists a year which is more than Denver or any other city this size . . . Fact is, most educated, critical thinkers who are not on the City Hall payroll realize these stats are phony . . . Luckily for City Hall, those kind of people are even more scarce than streetcar riders nowadays.

This is why they had to start the push for a new train before the Summer was over. Because now with JoCo back to work there aren't as many people to fake the "vibrancy" they want to show. Never mind that all the development is just tax abated anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe streetcar sounds good in theory but it's a bumpy ride and there's really not a lot of places for people to ride just along the line. That's why the extension makes more sense because there are people who would like to get to the plaza without having to fight traffic. The extension would make it more useful and that should have been part of the initial plan but that would have required a bigger vote. The commitment to do this thing piecemeal is a commitment to corruption.

It's called the MAX bus which already has an expedited route to the plaza. And what traffic?! I've lived in several large cities and Kansas City doesn't have real traffic; if every car waiting makes it through the light before if changes you don't have "traffic" you have cars moving to their destination without hindrance. Traffic... Lmao!

The people who don't even live in KCMO, but are an 83% majority of metro residents, have brought the kids downtown for a day to ride the train, have seen how little there is there of interest, and won't be back. Boring is the word, unless you've never been to an actual city and are blown away by all the tall buildings and spotty traffic in downtown KCMO.
By the way, the daily reports of murders, robberies, and other crime don't help.
And the tourist and convention numbers are fantasies.
The folks at city hall have moved on from the excitement of ribbon-cutting for the streetcar months ago.

ReplyDeleteThey need to wait at least a year and see how the Streetcar does in the winter snow and ice. They can't use data from other cities for that. Kansas City has its own unique problems with winter. And if the streetcar gets stopped or delayed because of snow problems - it will never be reliable transportation for people who need to get to work on time. It won't be reliable for work, just for frivolous tourist travel.
ReplyDeleteVirtually empty streetcars go by my loft window all day. The only time there is anyone on it is the weekends when the JoCo folks bring their kids for a trolley ride.

ReplyDeleteDave Johnson is lying about ridership already. The sensors count people when they get on and again when they get off. You can cut his numbers in half to start with and you can bet there is more cheating.

ReplyDeleteWhat about all the water/sewer, electrical and street improvements that were made in order for the toy train to operate? That's worth at least 200mil. The streetcar is an excuse to much needed repair to the midtown infrastructure.
ReplyDeleteRode the choo-choo the other weekday at around 11 a.m. It was packed. But with day-tripping suburbanites like me, mostly families with kids. Most boarded at Union Station, rode to the end of the line at City Market, had lunch somewhere and then rode back to Union Station. OK. That was fun. But not big fun. Will I ever do it again? Probably not. Downtown KC is mostly a lot of nothing. Not much reason to get off the train en route. Not anything to see. Would have been easier to drive to City Market, park the car (for free, unlike at Union Station), have lunch and drive home. I do that. Will do it some more.
