TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! TIME FOR #KCVINEXIT AS CITY HALL PREPARES TO WASTE ANOTHER $27 MILLION ON THE JAZZ DISTRICT!!!
Last night there was a rally disguised a media event hoping to drum up support for the Kansas City Jazz District that has already received more than $100 million over more than a generation and is still asking for $27 Million more worth of subsidy.
To wit . . .
WE HOPE READERS JOIN US THE #KCVINEXIT SO THAT THE JAZZ DISTRICT CAN STAND ON ITS OWN!!!
Local newsreaders know this topic all too well but here's a quick review . . .
- This ordinance is a blank check . . . There are no specifics or plans for these funds.
- Since last Summer there have been a spate of shootings in this district that seriously threaten biz and patrons and make any investment unsound. Unless we're talking about more security.
- Some low income neighbors worry about being pushed out of the district with this development cash.
- Even supporters of 18th & Vine claim it won't be enough. Even after $100 Million.
AN IMPORTANT PROCEDURAL NOTE . . . D-DAY ON THIS DECISION IS A WEEK FROM TODAY . . .
Here's the City Council power play . . .
Councilman Reed has chosen to call this ordinance out of committee to keep the plan moving forward after months of city staff work and public discussion.
The City Charter instructs that Items called out of committee shall be docketed under the “Second Readings” agenda item on the agenda of the next regular Council legislative session. At the time such items are scheduled for a final reading, they shall be docketed under the “Final Readings – Debate” agenda item.
But more importantly . . .
THE #KCVINEXIT IS A CHANCE FOR THE 3RD DISTRICT ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT TO ESCAPE THE CLUTCHES OF CITY HALL MANAGEMENT AND SEARCH FOR A BETTER FUTURE WITHOUT THE CONSTRAINTS OF CITY HALL!!!
Now, the response here is that Downtown and other entertainment districts also get constant subsidy so 18th & Vine is entitled to their fair share . . . The reality is that there's a cash crunch throughout Kansas City and all of the entertainment district spending needs to be trimmed . . . This is simply the best place to start, a demand for a better plan than throwing away good money after bad with no details and mostly a path away from subsidy that hasn't helped create a viable district so far.

ReplyDeleteDemand for a "better plan"? How about we demand a freakin PLAN! $100-million later and no comprehensive plan is in place to guide the redevelopment of this district. Zero, zip, nada. Calling this out of committee merely eliminates the public testimony portion of this if I'm not mistaken. Councilman Reed basically denied ANY public debate on the matter by this action. So much for being able to petition your government.

ReplyDeleteWhich costs the taxpayers $15 million/year until at least 2030.
Not sure how many of these fabulous success stories the taxpaying public can bear.
18th and Vine is nothing more than an endless hole for someone else's money to disappear into.
How about an aggressive, serious, and objective audit to see just who has gotten all of the $100 million so far?

Just set the money on fire.
The so called advocates have a promised subcontract financial interest in getting this money allocated. The City has never accounted in full detail who got the last $100 million. Citizens beware... as struggling East side residents see little benefit to this project. Reduced water bills would be more appreciated.
