Once again it seems that history is repeating itself as last Summer's carnage that killed almost a dozen innocent children has started again on the first day of Summer.
To wit . . .
POLICE REPORT THAT A CHILD WAS GUNNED DOWN THIS MORNING DURING A ROLLING GUN BATTLE THAT ONCE AGAIN PUSHES THE KANSAS CITY HOMICIDE COUNT TO A 5-YEAR-HIGH!!!

Deets . . .
"One child was shot and killed during a rolling gun battle near 8th and The Paseo early Monday morning, according to police.
"The vehicle unknowingly drove in the area where two cars were firing guns back and forth at one another. The child in the backseat of the car was fatally struck by a bullet.
"The young victim was taken to Truman Medical Center around 2 a.m., but was declared deceased upon arrival."
Again, let's break down the numbers . . .
Last year at this time there were only 34 homicides which was a 36% increase over the year before that . . . For a homicide number this high we have to go back to 2012. CLEARLY the numbers are on an upward trajectory.
No suspects have been arrested so far.

ReplyDeleteWho controls the KCPD? Not the Mayor and City Council. All they do is give them money. It is the police commission that set the policy and oversees the department. By the way, the commissioners are appointed by the Governor.
Everyone knows it doesn't matter who controls the PD, they can't prevent crime. They just show up after the shooting is over.

ReplyDeleteThe Police Board is composed of KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS, who are nominated by KANSAS CITY STATE SENATORS, and appointed by the governor.
By statute the mayor of KCMO is one of five members.
The notion that somehow these are outsiders who are controlled by folks in Jeff City is as much of a convenient joke as the observation that the KCMO mayor is just one of 13 electeds and is just a pitiful helpless figure who can only watch the city manager run the place.
When the mayor wants to push for things like development subsidies and streetcars, he can be quite a whirling dervish.
But for responsibilities for services that actually impact on residents lives like public safety? Not so much.
The observation that the council controls the KCPD budget is correct and gives them the same opportunities for oversight as Congress has over the Pentagon.
The sad fact is that in KCMO the people who run the place are way too busy on legacy projects and grandiose schemes to concern themselves with such boring subjects as the condition of streets, maintenance of water and sewer systems, or even public safety.
Nor do they have the guts to identify the actual problem and its causes.
Empty excuses and low-information voters aren't cutting it.
