SHAME!!! COUNCIL SEYZ TOY TRAIN STREETCAR EXTENSION PETITIONERS PREMATURE!!!

In a strange development that could kill this project before it starts, it's worth nothing that the upcoming petition to extend the streetcar doesn't seem to have council or mayoral support.

Moreover . . .

BOTH 4TH DISTRICT COUNCIL LADIES SAY THE STREETCAR EXTENSION PETITIONERS HAVE BAD TIMING AND THEIR PLAN IS PREMATURE!!!

Overall and 24 hours later it looks like Clay Chastain has more support and is putting more work into pushing his plan through, word it he'll probably get his petitions signed before the streetcar extension folks.

Here's the council being polite and revealing that they aren't going to stick their neck out for this one . . .

Mass Transit: Kansas City Streetcar Expansion Plan Gets Mixed Reviews

Actually, it was much worse than that . . . Here's the money line:

"We have much greater needs in the city," said 2nd District at-large Councilwoman Teresa Loar, who argued the focus should instead be on basic infrastructure needs that may require a big bond vote next year.

Her 2nd District colleague Dan Fowler agreed, saying, "I think the streetcar is very premature to be doing this. It's hard to judge what the overall success is going to be. In a year or two, maybe we can see."

They were reacting to a grass-roots petition filed in Jackson County Circuit Court, seeking permission to extend the existing 2.2 mile, $100 million streetcar line south about 3.75 miles along Main Street to 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard.

The effort is being led by members of the Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance, including influential business leaders like Gib Kerr of Cushman Wakefield, a real estate firm.

  1. Like I said, it was desperation. Money is running out for the streetcar and after the election there might not be the same kind of federal funding available.

The streetcar is really a legacy of the Obama years.

    Blame him and Sly.

Not a bad idea for the council people who want to be reelected to stay away from this one.

  2. If Sly doesn't want it, forget it.

    D.O.A.

  3. That real estate salesman lives in JoCo. Why don't they put the trolley there?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Sly does want it just like he wanted the last one. His cronies and political supporters who put him in office need there payoff, quid pro quo.If Sly doesn't pay them off he can kiss of replacing Cleaver.

  5. Grass roots movement my ass. It's all politicians and money people.

    ReplyDelete
  6. How can this endless list of quasi-public organizations like the Transit Authority, Port Authority, and all the rest, and all of which are proposing projects that depend on TAX MONEY, keep offering their self-serving nonsense?
Who's running the show and setting the public priorities in KCMO?
    Oh, that's right.
The next mayor is going to need expertise in financial management and debt control, because at Sly's current rate of spending/borrowing, and all without any revenue sources except for the city's general fund, the cupboard will be bare.
    How's Mike's hotel coming?

  7. They really should have thought this one through, this hurts a real extension effort. And they just gave Clay Chastain a boost because people will get the petitions confused.

    ReplyDelete
  8. None of those Council people are Mayoral candidates. They should hang it up.

  9. Katie Shields has not had time to set up her kickbacks from the heavy constructors yet!

  12. Streetcar II is a no go, let it wait for at least a couple of years Staub.

  13. Let’s start a petition to end the free ride. Let the people that use it, pay for it by paying a fare to ride.

  14. Teresa Liar is worried about "basic infrastructure" yet voted for a $51 million dollar subsidy for a Costco at a failed mall in the Northland...

  15. The core city wants it, wanted it last time, the time before that, the time before that, the time before that, the time before that.

    The core pays for it.

    The core should get it.

    That how democracy works.

  16. 4:45 PM - at least Costco will bring in sales tax income to the City. The free loaders riding the trolley bring in zero.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Downtown can't even afford the starter line the 318 and 555 voted for.

Doesn't help when property values are lowered to try to keep and attract people and you get special tax reductions-cuts the rest of the city doesn't enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Don't forget the $150 Million a year in corporate subsides downtown gets that apparently vanishes and leaves town seconds after the checks are cut.

  19. to Brookside??? WTF

it needs to go north, to the Airport.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Airport? Look at the current marketing. They want people to use the choo choo to go to bars and souvenir shops.

  21. The ATA needs to shut down this gimmick now. I won't want even more money directed away from the bus because of this project, service is shoddy as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ATA is losing a lot of money that used to be paid by riders of the bus who now get free rides on the streetcar. ATA will be out a bizness soon.

  23. Tony's Amateur Transit Planners, a blog for split level-living man children who have never been on a bus.

    KICK ASS TIPSTER PREDICTIONS INCLUDE:

    "No one will ride it"

    "Businesses will die"

"It will only be for white people"

    "It will kill bicyclers"

    "It will cause Austin-level traffic"

"Hobos will ride it/pee on it"

"Everyone on it will be mugged, shot or raped"

Meanwhile, all your lies are crumbling, people love it, it's faster and more convenient than a bus, businesses are doing BETTER all along the line, it has attracted both new residents and jobs.

Enjoy your big plate of crow, losers. We're laughing at you not with you.

  25. After listening to the expansion group on 98.1 ,Iam adamantly against.
Once again they're trying to fabricate a vote.
There were so many red flags, one thing is for certain, they will do what is necessary to shove this expansion down the throats of unsuspecting homeowners.
They are allowing the crossroad's voters to decide a property tax hike, and a very expensive one at that.
They are limiting the vote to certain blocks ,yet eventually everyone will have to pay .
This expansion will directly affect lower income homeowners and residents, due to a 1 cent progressive sales tax.
Essentially they are giving wealthy property owners leverage in raising one of the greatest progressive property tax hikes in the history of KCMO.
We must defeat this expansion, its the wrong time, especially since OHP VALENTINE are about to pass a Broadway Corridor CID, not to mention a 300% percent increase in our water bills..
Lets pull the plug on this arrogance, and also send a clear message to the City Council...WE ARE GOING TO CLEAN HOUSE!!
The 1st on the chopping block ,Jolie Justus, this pathetic ,self-righteous councilwoman needs to be booted to the curb

    ReplyDelete
  26. PETITIONERS PREMATURE??? City Hall needs to investigate shutting down the starter line. Why throw good money after bad?

    ReplyDelete
  27. There will be no petition, this proposal doesn't even need council support.
The proposal will go before a judge for advancement, probably the same Judge who approved the crossroad's vote.
The sad part ,wealthy supporters will vote for approval, just as if they lived or owned property in midtown.
The tax district is 1/3 mile from either side of main ,Brookside, Stateline to Campbell, River Market to 53rd.
