The recent slate of tax cuts and development deals that seems to come at the cost of more police officers on violent local streets is finally starting to take its toll on Mayor Sly's popularity.
To wit . . .
AMID WHAT COULD BE AN UPCOMING SUMMER OF VIOLENCE, KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY CONFRONTS MORE OPPOSITION TO NEW DEVELOPMENT SCHEMES IN THE AFTERMATH OF POLICE CUT NEWS!!!
More to the point . . . Extension of a troubled streetcar line is a no go along with more development subsidy given public perception that these economic development schemes come at the cost of officers protecting local streets. In fairness, supporters of the mayor are working hard to "educate" the public on the shell game of city hall finances that they contend proves this theory incorrect.
Additionally . . . Kansas City violence seems to be trending upward and the Mayor's economic development agenda hasn't done much to benefit the urban core despite big money promises for more development on 18th & Vine . . . Reality . . . Very little of that cash will arrive in time to create jobs or inspire economic growth.
And so . . .
THE PROSPECT OF INCREASED KANSAS CITY VIOLENCE AS POLICE BUDGET ARE CUTS THREATEN TO DESTROY WHAT'S LEFT OF MAYOR SLY'S POLITICAL CAPITAL!!!
Consequences . . .
- The upcoming bond issue push could be tougher.
- Mayor Sly's endorsement means less to council members.
- Streetcar extension faces an uphill battle.
Like it or not, it seems Mayor Sly might finally be held accountable for a city hall budget that places development above public safety.

KC missed its chance when no real challenger wanted to take on the mayor. If the best KC can do is "the general" then we get what we deserve.

ReplyDeleteI don't get what the cops are upset about. The way things are going they can get regular work pushing the train back to the station at least 4 days out of the week. Of course as bad as the city is managed they still won't pay those overpriced off duty officer rates.
ReplyDeleteWho are these so-called insiders? The same "opposition" was also said of the streetcar, the convention hotel, and other projects in KCMO, and they still happened. Post names and documented meeting minutes & direct quotes. Projecting a wishlist doesn't make it fact.

COPS CAN'T DETER CRIME WHEN *CENTER ZONE & EAST ZONE ***ONLY HAVE 8-10 OFFICERS ON MOST SHIFTS*** AND SHOAL CREEK DIVISION HAS LESS OFFICERS WORKING & ROUTINELY ONLY HAVE 2-5 OFFICERS ON THE DOGWATCH SHIFT* WHEN YOU NEED POLICE, DON'T BE SURPRISED IF HELP DOESN'T COME FOR 20-30 MINUTES OR LONGER! To you young kiddos who have never worked what we old salts called the "Wheel" back in the day ( 8-Hour Plan ), be ready to utilize the opportunity to seek employment elsewhere. Sad thing is, the folks in patrol are the ones suffering from the Chefs decision over the past 3 years to start up this NOVA Squad.
