FORMER JACKSON COUNTY EXEC MIKE SANDERS MAKES RUCKUS DEBUT!!!

Special treat for Kansas City political denizens tonight ... The former JaxCo Exec who resigned in the middle of the night but then earned an impressive consulting contract on a vaporware transit line now takes the stage of Kansas City's GOLD STANDARD political talk show.

Check the description . . .

"Mike Shanin interviews Dr. Robert Vartabedian, President of Missouri Western State University, about the play he wrote called "Harry and Walter: Missouri's Native Sons" about Harry S Truman and Walter Cronkite. Steve Rose, Lisa Johnston, Mike Sanders and Ron Freeman discuss options for closing the KS budget gap, the financial struggles of the Jazz District and this week's presidential primaries."

  1. TKC, what you need to do is send a special shout out to the guy who often does those AWESOME ruckus roundups. Those are my favorite part of the postings on this show. Always spot on, always more informative than the program and probably more widely viewed. That guy KICKS ASS!

  10. Agreed that Sanders is annoying. Apart from this, the discussion is actually pretty good. Anyone who feels most episodes are too liberal might want to actually watch this one as it isn't very left leaning by comparison.

  11. Well alright then! I'll take my cue from host Mike Shanin this week, dial back the criticism, and say that this episode was actually decent, if not outright acceptable. Shocking! I know.

Welcome to Ruckus, that weekly food for thought fight over the news of the day and the trends of the time.

Harry and Walter? Whew! For a second there, I thought the LGBT community was trying to spring a J. Edgar Hoover historical surprise on us!

    ON TO THE PANEL

Lisa Johnston -- a columnist and political consultant from KS

Steve Rose -- JoCo civic leader and KC Star columnist (my condolences!)

Mike Sanders -- former JaCo Executive and now attorney in private practice representing The Hair Club For Men.

Ron Freeman -- former KS GOP executive director and now motivational speaker/writer, and former kick-ass athlete.

"If It Weren't For Bad Luck, I'd Have No Luck At All"
Is Shanin starting a segment on the KC Star Editorial Board? No, it's the KS Budget Shortfall.
Rose reports the Legislature may adjourn and let Gov. Brownback make all the necessary cuts to balance the budget. Freeman speaks the obvious truth that state expenses need to be carefully examined and challenged at this time of economic slow growth. Johnston counters that the Governor's tax policies have been an abysmal failure, then blows a smoke ring while suggesting KS follow Colorado's move to legalize/tax marijuana! Sanders opines that Brownback plays Kick-The-Can, while his favorite was Hide-N-Seek.

More Multi-Millions For 18th and Vine
Since the early 1990's, KCMO taxpayers have already invested $70 (+) million dollars in the district, with marginal results at best! Sanders begins with the bleak past, but then offers an optimistic defense....forever the politician. Rose gets a gold star for giving a politically incorrect answer---"people are afraid to go down there"----unfounded fears perhaps, but it's the truth. He gets queasy just thinking about $100 million spent on the area, given what we've seen so far. "It was Emanuel Cleaver's dream come true, and we're living with it!" Johnston reports that Jazz and Classical currently rank on the lower rungs of popular music. Freeman answers that the road to success lies just West....the Crossroads....bring in some people that understand how to grow and manage a business.

  12. (CONTINUED)
Best quip of the program: (Shanin to Sanders) "I never thought you could tell a quick story!"

    Political Primaries
Johnston admits that she's taking a possible Hillary indictment very seriously, while Trump now has a fairly easy path remaining to the nomination. Rose scores again with blunt talk, critiquing Cruz's announcement of Carly Fiorina as running mate. "I don't like Ted Cruz, but I think I like him better than Carly Fiorina!" Straight talk. Johnston says it's all about Cruz' California strategy. Sanders denies familial relations with Bernie, before explaining that Cruz's actions of political insider dealmaking reflects a tone-deaf attitude toward current voter resentment. Freeman scores major truth points when stating that the media has facilitated a false story-line of a close race between Sanders and Clinton, when the Democrat establishment had locked in on Hillary from the beginning.

I'll skip Roasts and Toasts this week, and make the surprising admission that this episode was one of the best in many weeks. What made the difference? While Ron Freeman was excellent as usual.....Steve Rose spoke forcefully but calmly, without regard for political correctness. Please continue sir!.....Mike Sanders delivered a good rookie panelist performance exhibiting humor and respect.....and Lisa Johnston, once again, conveyed her opinions in a very straightforward manner while staying cool, calm and collected. These four people made a good panel, so I'm refraining this week from the requisite Roasting of the Ruckus producers.

Oh, and to Mr. Shanin, after you turn 65, maybe your wife will accompany you to the Social Security office for enrollment! haha

  13. You want an equal balance between conservative & liberal on this show, but not on this blog.

10:41, man invented the concept of the soul, & all the man made religions that followed, because he couldn't accept the simple truth that we are just hairless apes with delusions of grandeur. Science has also shown that these 'races' that you imagine don't exist. The whole absurdity of American History is that we all came out of Africa. That man that you deride because of the color of his skin is related to you!

We are all related to each other, & there is only the human race.

  16. Best RUCKUS show this year IMO. Rose and Sanders were the stars. Sanders needs to be a regular.

  21. Still no calls from Ruckus for a guest appearance Tony?

I guess you could post a picture of the producers daughter and pander up a few hits while embarrassing her dad.

    Free speech, heh?

  22. Sanders did well but it is very transparent that he misses the limelight and being on TV and people having to listen to him. Some things never change.

  23. I'm curious why Mike Sanders hired a public works director that resides in Johnson County Kansas and had zero experience running a public works department

  24. Still no calls from Ruckus, 12:39? I guess that makes it Tony 1, 12:39 0.

  25. I'd like to see more Lisa and less Mary, Glorioso, and the gaggle of other liberal dorks. It's nice to hear a Democrat who has something to say other than the usual mindless liberal talking points (Brownback bad, Hillary wonderful).

And, yes, let's see Tony back on the program!

Last night was great. Straight talk from four panelists who all had something of substance to say. What a change from last week which was a vapid disaster.

I hope the Ruckus producers keep having more shows like this one!
