More than ever before, the struggle to renew the Kansas City earnings tax seems like a fight for the hearts and minds of East Side voters.
High murder counts, poor services from City Hall, exclusion from participation in big money development projects and a host of other disparities could provide incentive to vote against the E-Tax for East Side denizens and now it's up to Mayor Sly to sell this controversial levy for another 5 years.
Take a look at an important pitch meeting coming up . . .
Mayor Sly might have won his last election contest by a huge margin but it's also worth noting that the contest was one of the LOWEST VOTER TURNOUTS for a Mayoral election in Kansas City history.
It has been about 5 years since Mayor Sly James has been able to galvanize Kansas City's African-American vote bloc in any real way.
Meanwhile, Crosby Kemper III and his Show-Me Crew have been able to garner political support by identifying a great deal inequity built into Kansas City's tax system.
And while this racial battle is important . . . It seems that dissatisfaction with City Hall and Mayor Sly might actually unify the great white Northland and African-American votes on the East Side.

ReplyDeleteTony, the reason turnout at the polls was so low was because of the strength of Sly. Good grief, the only people who dared to run against him were two nincompoops, and your favorite nincompoop couldn't even beat the other nincompoop and finished a distant third. A very distant third.
ReplyDeleteHad it been a hotly contested race between two good candidates, you'd have seen a higher turnout. But there was a reason nobody with even half a brain decided to take on Sly. Think about what that reason might be.
And no, it wasn't because there is a shadow government of a cabal of the powerful that you never seem to get around naming who blessed Sly and chased every one else off.
It's because Sly inherited a hell of a mess from Funkhouser and did a lot to fix it, including vastly improving city services you always bitch and whine about.
7:18 is absolutely correct-----East side leaders are being paid and promised more City hall corruption deals as usual---so they will take to the airways and support the e-tax. With Try and Sly---it is always a con game----involving City Hall slush funds.

ReplyDeleteThe good news is that out of the nearly 70,000 people who live on the eastside, less than .01 percent ever go to "forums# like this or belong to the membership (you have to pay to be part of NAACP). With a fledgling membership base and little influence in Kansas City, this Mayor is once again playing host to a media blitz. It is a con because most White people assume but do not know that the majority of Eastside residents dont participate in the organization - and the ones who do or did, havent for years.

ReplyDeleteAs King Sly continues to pander to citizens of KC and the very ass clowns who pay little to nothing in E Tax, those to really pay the tax and have no voice (Citizens of Wayandotte, Clay, Johnson and Jackson Counties) need to prepare to pay back the mooches of KC with a BOOYCOTT. No concerts, events, festivals, shows, gas, groceries - not even a freaking Snickers bar or soda pop should be purchased in the city limits of KC. The only way to put a stop to this bullshit is to make it hurt. People living outside the city limits have been punished over and over for being productive and spending their hard earned money inside a city that can't seem to listen. It is time to ring Sly's fucking door bell and let him and his mooching, pocket picking city know we are not going to stand for it any longer.

ReplyDeleteHow about we have a county initiative whereby people who drive outside the city have to pay a $500.00 annual tax. It does not matter if their state and county taxes already helped pay the bills. Additionally the citizens of KC do not get to vote on the initiative and have no say in the affairs that can affect them outside the city limits? That is exactly what the mooching ass holes of KC are trying to pull. They think this is just fine because someone else is getting screwed.
