ReplyDeleteBy the mid-1970s, the black liberation movement had been mostly defeated. The rebellions had been put down with armed force, and the revolutionaries were dead or imprisoned. U.S. capitalism adopted reforms to take the steam out of the movement. Black mayors were elected in cities across the U.S. New careers opened up for black professionals. There had always been black business owners and middle class people. But legal segregation and white mob violence kept them living with, and servicing, the black working class. Now many of the legal and social barriers holding down the black bourgeoisie and middle class were removed. They quickly rose socially and economically, and left the black poor behind.

ReplyDelete5:04 yes, and that "foxhole religion", so to speak, when the armed services got officially race integrated. Working and warring side by side went a long way toward reliance and understanding. Class divisions as much as race causes were being battled in America's mid-century wider prosperities. The G.I. bill lifted blacks from laborers to professional ranks and entrepreneurial roles to join middle-class whites.
