ReplyDeletewhile it's true that there might have been fewer people outside on the streets today. Once again you're missing the big picture here TKC. More online shopping means more opportunity to make sales overall. If local merchants are smart they step up their web design and tout their online shopping ALL YEAR. People are willing to buy things online and there are more options every day. If the locals are leaving the stores behind, the stores simply need to follow the money.

ReplyDeleteOnline shopping is so much easier. Most places offer free shipping and free returns. Many don't charge sales tax, and those that do usually only charge the state rate. With the convenience the Internet offers and the awful weather, it's no surprise brick and mortar stores aren't doing the business they used to do.

ReplyDeleteI worked today and it was like a regular weekend shift. People just go online or they can't afford it.
I don't know what others experienced, but to me the deals were just not there. I know the retailers claimed they were spreading them out, but that was bullshit. It is fact that Walmart and Best Buy didn't have shit in stock for door busters and Walmart's online sale at 2 in the morning was a joke as the hot door busters were out of stock before the sale even began. Their computer servers crashed all to hell within 15 seconds of the online sale begining and it was hours before they got a handle on the mess. It was so bad that their customer service line had a back log of over 1 1/2 hours witin 1 hour of the alleged sale beginning. To say it was an amateur clusterfuck is being too niece. Walmart was in no way prepared for the event they were promoting. I did see a lot of softline sales at various sites, but apparel has about a 70 percent mark up anyway. Same goes for jewelry. A 50 percent off jewelry sale results in tons of profit. So all in all I see the retailers trying to bullshit the public on their sales and people were not biting. I think cyber Monday will tell the full story, but I'm pretty sure I'm right on this one. The retailers just didn't bring a lot to the party this year and folk were not biting.

While Black Friday is an obvious public relations scheme to get potential shoppers excited and out to the stores, The Kansas City Star is a commercial advertising medium masquerading as a public news service.
Increasingly, more Americans recognize that their happiness and well-being is not fulfilled by buying more "stuff".....just as Kansas City metro residents have realized that The Kansas City Star is not representing their voice and best interests, but rather the Star's corporate interests and those who collude with them to keep power away from the public.

ReplyDelete8:08: So true. A lot of the stuff advertised is junky. Walmart had a 32-inch smart (Roku) TV for $125. When you go online, you find (1) it's 720 res and (2) there are only 2 per store and (3) you have to go to the store to buy it.

Walmart offered a $25.00 Moto G phone. Ordered two, paid with credit card. Got email to pick up a 3pm. Get to store. Guess what ? No phones. Call Walmart customer service, told the phones will be in on December something.

Walmart's online sale was a complete bust. Their servers were fucked from the first second. They were totally out of their door buster HDTV's (all three models) within a minute All I got was server errors and weird ass messages that made no sense at all. Given that their online sale was a shipwreck last year you would think they would have taken care of their IT issues. Unbelievable that Walmart would spend millions printing full color Black Friday ads and all they really accomplished was pissing off a lot of customers. the hilarious part was how both Amazon and Walmart forced you to use their apps for the online sale and then turned around and promoted that Black Friday was a big succes with record numbers ordering though online applications. Well, of course you ass holes. You planned it that way. This fiasco was so fucking Walmart!
