WaPo: Along with the commission’s action, the Justice Department has instructed its prosecutors not to charge low-level, nonviolent drug offenders who have no connection to gangs or large-scale drug organizations with offenses that carry severe mandatory sentences.
And so, this is either a glorious day that will provide a bit of equity and will admit defeat in at least one facet of the silly and never ending drug war . . . Or convicts who have had a great deal of time to become better criminals are now turned lose.
Whatever the case . . . Nobody is mentioning that letting these guys hit the streets on Halloween probably isn't the best sign of things to come . . .

ReplyDeleteAnother more likely change that is affecting kcmo is the change that MODOC had in the west bottoms. The community release center formerly known as KCCRC previously acted as a halfway house at 651 Mulberry in the bottoms. Offenders housed there were allowed to leave during the day to "seek employment " regardless of their convictions, many of which were violent crimes. Bernard Jackson the Waldo Rapist was supposed to be there during his attacks. Their failure to report back was often noted and had no consequences.
ReplyDeleteOn September 1st of this year the 200+ offenders at KCCRC were released without any conditions of supervision despite their remaining sentence lengths or convictions. The MODOC constructed a fence around the location and mandated it to be a medium security prison for DOC inmates. The offenders now held there are not allowed to leave however as previously mentioned all of the 200+ who were previously at the location were simply released into the West Bottoms and downtown KC to fend for themselves. No jobs, no reporting, no money.
I wonder what the crime stats will show before and after????
