TKC THURSDAY QUESTION: SHOULD MAYOR SLY JAMES ADMIT DEFEAT IN KANSAS CITY FAIR WAGE FIGHT FOLLOWING MISSOURI GOP GOV. JAY VETO OVERRIDE?!?!

The veto session in Missouri holds huge consequences for Kansas City and a debate that has been dragging on for quite some time.

Take a look:

As their last act Wednesday, senators completed a veto override of a bill prohibiting cities and counties from setting local minimum wages or employee benefits that exceed state or federal standards.

To wit . . .

TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! THE KANSAS CITY FAIR WAGE FIGHT HAS BEEN SMACKED DOWN ONCE AND FOR ALL!!! MISSOURI LAW NOW CLEARLY STATES THAT LOCAL WORKERS CANNOT RAISE WAGES WITHIN CITY LIMITS!!!

And so, this begs the question . . .

Is it time for Mayor Sly to save Kansas City hundreds of thousands of dollars by admitting defeat and taking a minimum wage petition off the ballot???

During election season the Mayor cynically and irresponsibly used this movement to drum up support and garner more urban core credibility . . . Now, JUST LIKE WE SAID, the end result is an outcome that most people who KNOW THE LAW predicted . . . Just like we did among our blog community.

And so, the Mayor has a very uncomfortable choice . . . Either admit his mistake and save Kansas City hundreds of thousands of dollars OR allow an illegal petition to move forward and cost Kansas City time and money in order to fight legislation that the Missouri General Assembly has already ruled against.

What do you think he should do???

Developing . . .

  1. Remember, TKC, the same thing happened to the Mayor on open carry.

He had some harsh words for the Missouri republicans last time. I wonder if he'll find somebody to blame this time?

  2. KCs minimum wage ordinance is now grandfathered, because the state law prohibitting local control will go into effect AFTER the ordinance was already passed.

Had the veto not been overridden by the big gubmint republican nanny state, KCs minimum wage ordinance would probably be ruled illegal in court, since there was already a law in the books possibly prohibiting municipal minimum wages. The passage of a new law is like an admission that the previous law did not cover minimum wages, so KCs law will stand.

That's the problem with Republicans. They are dumb, so their shit backfires all the time.

    Mr. Tony,
If a fight for local rule on this issue is needed then we indeed fight.

  4. 7:50, unless the existing ordinance is specifically grandfathered in the law itself, it is not grandfathered at all. It is, rather, voided. At best, you have an argument why that principle should not apply in this case. Not a winning argument, but an argument.

  8. Since KC bureaucrats are already receiving benefits and some pay that exceeds state and/or Federal levels will KC be forced to take back those benefits and stop overcharging tax payers?

  9. How the hell are you ever going to convince King Sly that state law applies to him?

  11. NO MINIMUM WAGE ORDINANCE APPROVED.
7:50 post is WRONG the $13 an hour ordinance is NOT GRANDFATHERED because it was not in effect.
City Attorney has stated that the ordinance has to be repealed, and the $15 an hour has to be pulled from the ballot.

  12. Sly probably supported the veto override in private. These guys have to pander to the masses but in private they protect their campaign contributors. No way the real estate developers want a high minimum wage. How can they build new retail if Wal Mart won't pay $15 per hour?

  13. Sly is a phony, he never intended this to work.

  17. Look, this is how it goes. For the mere attempt to do this Sly and every manager business owner has the mind set that the wage they are paying IS now 15$+ and you should be thankful for it. The employee is precieved to HAVE gotten the raise. We have done you a big favor.

  20. He needs to keep putting the city deeper and deeper into debt. Taxpayers, citizens in general here are easily exploited.

  21. Sure Miss Sweaty Piggy Pie. Go ahead and cost the taxpayers of Killa City a few hundred thousand more dollars on a stupid idea.

In the mean time let the $8.00 hour or whatever the fuck they make, dipshits that can't get a french fry order correct survive on what they currently make. Want more money, go to MCC and learn to read and count. Get my fucking fry order correct and then I will give you fucks a raise.

As for you Miss Sweaty Pig, get back to fucking your nasty ass cunt with that 40 vold Dewalt powered nigger colored concrete vibrator.

  22. I suppose Sly will just have to follow the law or his conscience on this one, just like American folk hero Kim Davis. Bring us liberty or bring us death! Oh wait, this is just about paying workers a living wage? Are the gays not involved at all in this? Three cheers for big government mandates!

    ReplyDelete
  23. 2:10 You miss the point entirely, people aren't against a bigger government telling a smaller government what to do, they are against over-reaching government regulation (which the minimum wage increase is).

  24. KC takes steps to remove $15 per hour minimum wage initiative from Nov. ballot

“If minimum wage workers in Kansas City are to receive an increase in their $7.65 per hour wages, they must look to their employers, the Missouri General Assembly or a statewide initiative petition,” Geary said in a statement released by the Kansas City mayor’s office.

    Well so much for that!
