People forget that Hitler's worldview, or philosophy if you will, was a product of his times. He was born in 1889, and by the time he was in his mid teens in 1905 Darwinian concepts of struggle and survival were predominant in the universities and intellectual circles.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, Darwins ideas were popularized in the Germany of the Kaiser by Ernst Haeckel...often called "the German Darwin".
And, along with this, the ideas of Francis Galton...Darwins first cousin, who was praised by Darwin in Darwins book "The Descent of Man"...held sway. Galton has been called "The Father of Eugenics", the idea that you could improve the race by selective breeding. There was much more to it than that, but that was the goal.
Combine this with a militaristic Europe, and the willingness of all of Europes leaders to sacrifice young men in their perceived struggle for survival...although Karl Marx had explained decades before that the real goal of such struggles was the dominance of the upper upper class ( the one percent as we would call them today)...and it is not surprising that you had a group of survivors of the World War who wanted to take power for themselves.
And, it so happened, that Hitler had the personal skills to do it and a version of a scientific philosophy to back him up. You can argue that Darwin and Galton were "misinterpreted"...I don't think they were...but those were the prevailing views.
In many ways, they still are.
Darwin and Galton? Non one cares about them now, but you are right, their views did affect the course of those events.

That violence, encouraged, aided and abetted by President "If I Had A Son" Obama and his craven despicable Attorney General Eric "Going to Mike Brown's Funeral" is directly, categorically, metaphysically responsible for those dead cops and the elevation of racial hatred in this country not seen since the 60's.
