In the hours and days that followed, KCPD released almost no information about the circumstances surrounding the killing. It was virtually non-existent in local news coverage. A search of social media turned up nothing on the young man. All of this culminated to create the illusion that Javon Hawkins didn’t exist; that he was not a full human being connected to a larger community. But that’s what law enforcement is counting on. They are counting on this case to go the same way as all the others; that no one will notice another Black man killed by police; that it will be swept under the rug; that no officers will be indicted; that yet another Black life will not matter.
To make matters worse, KCPD has reached a new level of boldness in their disregard for Black lives. Due to the impotence and utter uselessness of local media – who repeatedly fail to challenge any questionable act by local police departments, including the role of KCPD in the Javon Hawkins homicide – a community member asked Forté for more information on the shooting via Twitter. This is the response they received:
Yes, you read that correctly. KCPD’s Chief Darryl Forté was delayed in responding to requests for information surrounding the murder by police of another Black man because he was busy tending to a sick hamster.

Now . . . Notice that the topic of the Chief's Plaza tweeting is still a sore spot for some denizens of the urban core.
More importantly . . . There has been a great deal of community inquiry into the deadly police shooting of Javon Hawkins . . . TKC Fun Fact that nobody else in Kansas City reports . . . Police shootings are not automatically counted as part of the local homicide number . . . Just a few years ago those numbers were included.
Now . . . To be fair, the Chief will answer some questions on Twitter but he isn't known for getting into long conversations using the social media outlet.

Peak says the man had been running throughout the neighborhood for hours but when he came back through, he threatened to strike a neighbor with a sword he was swinging and that neighbor called 911.
“He started running in circles, took off his clothes. He was going crazy. Going nuts,” a witness said.
“She told him multiple times to halt, to comply, he was not listening at all,”
It soulds like KCPD might have saved some lives with this shooting. That is at least something to consider.

As for the arrogant posts by the soon to be ousted Police Chief, he is a terrible people person and his job performance doesn't meet expectations. That big old binder of thoughts and plans he used during the hiring process to get the chief job should be buried with the dead hamster.

ReplyDeleteI don't think you understand the difference between Kansas City and Detroit. Detroit had a large black and the largest Arab population. GM got into finance because making cars is a pain in the ass in the 21st Century. There are no other cities depopulating like Detroit, unless they happen to already evacuated a city or island already under water.
