Our blog community has warned of violence near the Sprint Center for more than a year and now the situation has finally reached the boiling point.

ReplyDeleteSome of the comments about the Sprint Center are good examples of the kinds of earnest young folks who have no concept of where money comes from, where it goes, or any responsibility for much of anything other than what they want. And right now!
ReplyDeleteThe notion that Sprint Center "gave" money to KCMO city government is akin to saying that a homeowner "gave" money to the city when they paid their property tax. Sprint Center is what is laughingly referred to as "a private/public" partnership and, while it's one of the few examples of these endless KCMO projects that actually generates some income for the public half of it "partners", the funding for the facility included many tens of millions of tax dollars, so perhaps there should be some return.
As for all the hundreds of millions this or other publicly-subsidized facilities like the stadiums "pour" into the economy: The Sprint Center is an entertainment venue and the vast majority of ticket purchasers are residents of the metro, who would spend those entertainment dollars somewhere else, if not there. It's a simple transference from one place of business to another. And the folks who should be less than happy about that are all the local small entertainment venues who are not subsidized. The Sprint Center does not print money.
The sad fact is that downtown KCMO is built mostly on public debt, hope, and hype and when millenials age out, fads change, and interest rates increase, all of which are inevitable, the real test of financial sustainability will present itself.
It seems highly unlikely that a taxpayer subsidized amusement park for 20-somethings can even survive without ongoing and ever-increasing transfers from the general fund of the city.
At the end of the day, facts, reality, and arithmetic will out.
