KCPS Board to Name Al Tunis Interim Tonight
Al Tunis is KCPS's lead negotiator for the Academie Lafayette/KCPS “partnership!!!
With a slogan of “Al for AL” the KCPS board will usher in Al Tunis as its interim superintendent tonight.
The “AL” stands for Academie Lafayette and “Al for AL” signals the socially elite that all is well with their takeover of Southwest High School.
Undoubtedly the most ill-conceived, half-baked venture between a district and a charter, the Academie Lafayette proposal seeks to finalize a district-within-a-district scheme that has been taking shape for 3 years in the “white corridor”. And in case you don’t know the corridor, it's the horizontal strip tracing State Line and extending east to Rockhill…the strip with the highest earners, most valuable homes and best-educated population in the city. Some of the privileged are sick and tired of a public school district that can’t keep their kids safe and educate their kids, so they’re in a grab for the best schools in Brookside and it’ nearly a fete de compli. Helping the corridor are board members Jon Hile, Gunnar Hand, Airick West and Patti Mansur – well Airick is termed “the whitest guy on the board”, so no surprise there, but what’s with the board members living east of Troost? Two of them, Curtis Rogers and Carl Evans are ready to vote Al in, too. Amazing what a personal phone call from the Mayor can do!

Gunnar Hand is leaving KC. So whatever he offers is as useless as all the previous useless stuff he offered.

ReplyDeleteLooks like a guy that Sly would pick. That's the problem with Kansas City schools. There are too much politics and nothing about educating our students. It's a shame that these board members felt like they had to kiss the Mayor's ring. What a horrible way to run things.
ReplyDeleteThey talk about grifters who used to run the district but now we have to see that there are grifters who also want big business to control the district an that's just as bad because it ignores the needs of the vast majority of our students.
I think that "fete di accompli" means "the party is over."

ReplyDeleteThe "partnership" is the brainchild of Airick West who thought he could garner political favor in the white corridor by giving them what they want --a reason not to have to move to Johnson County.

And while they were meeting in secret and tying their star to KCPS, the district sold Westport Middle School to a commercial developer for $750,000!!!
Talk about diversion...AL hasn't noticed yet.

ReplyDeleteInstead of pretending they are not and trying to educate them along side whites (and we all know the teachers go easy on them and pass them on from year to year), we should put them in special nigger schools to teach them the basics of cotton picking, garbage collecting, ditch digging, and so forth. I think it's actually cruel to put niggers in normal schools and expect them to perform equally. They consistently have the lowest test scores and highest drop out rates.
So many niggers were being placed in special education classes after taking IQ tests that showed them to be retarded, a Judge banned schools from even giving IQ tests to niggers back in 1979:

Mental retardation used to be anything below an IQ of 85 but it has been lowered in 1959 to now mean anything below an IQ of 70.
Too many niggers were being labeled as retarded. But as you can see above, even lowering the retarded threshold by 15 points STILL didn't help the niggers so IQ tests of niggers had to be completely abandoned.

ReplyDeleteThe merger of the French magnet and SWHS could be the last, best chance to save the KCPS district. There is no reason to believe that the high school would be some lily-white throwback to 1955. The current AL is a diverse school--and seems to be working well.
ReplyDeleteBesides,white students would not be the only ones to benefit from a functioning school on the west side. A viable Southwest would also provide black and other minority students with another choice. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain from the move.
Maybe the downward spiral can be stopped. No other district in the area would post signs on the school lawns proudly proclaiming that they are "provisionally accredited."
It is time to make some serious move if the KC schools are ever to be seriously viable in a comprehensive manner that includes students of all races who, along with their parents, desire an orderly, challenging experience. Surely there is room for both Lincoln and Southwest in a city the size of KC.
As the parent of an AL student who has been praying for a miracle to get a high school at Southwest, I am hoping that we can finally get this to happen. Our family can't afford St. Theresa's, Sion or Pembroke. We're also not willing to move out of the city.

I'm sick of "special interest groups" trying to keep the AL/KCPS collaboration from happening. Academie Lafayette has the highest test scores of any charter school in the state. Our scores are better than any of the suburban schools in the metro as well. It's obvious that AL is better at educating kids than KCPS. Why on earth wouldn't you want your kids to have an alternative to Lincoln Prep?
There's no denying Lincoln is a great school, but isn't this town big enough for TWO high performing high schools? It's idiotic to hold back this opportunity.
If the protesters against this would spend one hour at AL in the classroom and really open their eyes, they would be able to see how an AL education is amazing! I was skeptical of a charter school education (especially in French immersion!) but we took a tour when we were trying to decide where to send our daughter and the second we walked out the door at AL we knew that was the place to send our child. The spirit of the teachers and students is incredible. You actually could see children from all kinds of backgrounds learning together in the classroom from teachers from all over the world. Their test scores and the character the school instills in their students speaks for itself. Even the youngest students are held to high standards academically and behaviorly and they achieve it.
Why on earth would you try to stop proven success? It makes no sense!
I'm praying that we can get this through. It's an incredible opportunity for ALL CHILDREN that live in Kansas City. This is an urgent situation in our community. Egos and agendas need to be put aside and do the right thing for KC's kids...ALL of them!

This is what is known
as a "systems" failure.
Data shows that involved AND educated parents push for good schools and that's great. However, resoundingly, research demonstrates that no matter how "absent" the parent, EFFECTIVE schools educate at-risk students. (Check out Green Dot, Community Schools, Boston Public, New Orleans,etc.)
